Quick Reply Issue - What do these errors mean?

Postby rr1165 on Sun Jul 19, 2009 3:00 am

(Right Click Messege/Click Quick Reply) Result: "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied." (Click OK) "Unable to open Internet Shortcut "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\QuickReply1TW9.url" (The four numbers after QuickReply change with each attempt.)

Yes - URL: Mailto Protocol points to Outlook. (Note: Sometimes Quick Reply works and opens an email response. What does QuickReply look for in an email and how do you adjust quick reply?)

Any insights would be appreciated.

If I am reading this correctly you are not getting a link to Outlook, Outlook Express or to whatever you are using to send emails. I am sure this issue has been addressed before. Have you done a search on 'quick reply'? I will try and dig it up for you if possible.

Just dug this link up for you.

No, this hasn't been directly addressed before and no, it has nothing to do with the wrong or multiple email clients.

I am using Win98SE and IE 6, but from what I can determine that is not the issue.

The issue is the URL file association and what appears to be the: %l switch.

Here is what worked for me:
Folder Options > File Types > Internet Shortcut > Deleted it > Re-created the file association per MS' Q175306 > Did not include the %l switch in the open command: rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL > installed the QuickReplyUseOld.reg patch > rebooted > Quick Reply works.

One DRAW BACK: The Start menu favorites' folders all read empty. The favorites are still there, but you have to right click the folder and then click open. They also can be opened from within IE or viewed at: C\Windows\favorites - the point, again, they're still there. I don't know how to fix this issue since if you repair IE the folders come back but Quick Reply doesn't work.

There are more steps and insights to the answer offered above, but what it all comes down to is: "SLOPPY PROGRAMMING!"

P.S.
If you open IE, and click favorites, the folders appear; then, if you click a folder, the contents are listed. Favorites just doesn't work properly using the Start Button > Favorites.

This problem is completely new to me, never heard anything like it before where altering the Quick Reply method screwed with Favourites. We aren't developing that version of MailWasher anymore unless there's something major....so unless someone has a bright idea I don't think it's something that will be fixable.

Re: Quick Reply Issue / MAPI32 Mess - My Solution!?

Postby rr1165 on Sat Jul 25, 2009 5:26 am

THE SOLUTION: (I suggest you read the post as well... The solution for my Win98SE, IE6 & Outlook 2000 environment)

1. Click IE Properties > Programs > Contact List > Select Microsoft Outlook (not Address Book)

2. Download & Install the MW "QuickReplyUseOld patch

3. Open MW (I am using 6.51) - let it open completely, either open or select the e-mail you wish to reply to and click Quick Reply. You won't get an error if the Quick Reply button depresses and returns to its original postion when you click on it. It is only when it "sticks" in the depressed position that the error occurs...

Oops! Still getting error messages but less frequently - BUT - found by adding the following step I get no error messages.

4. Send an e-mail to yourself. Using my default e-mail address, I marked the subject TEST with just a signature in the body of the e-mail, once it appeared in MW I selected or opened it and clicked QuickReply - it works; and all other remaining e-mails respond to QuickReply without error.

It appears that once QuickReply runs it places two .tmp files in the Windows Temp folder which 'trains' MW - of course I am quessing. These two files appear and disappear with the opening and closing of each e-mail that you send a QuickReply to...

My XP Pro machine with IE7 & Outlook 2007 using MW 6.51, no patch with MAPI32 works fine - go figure...!

The solution, at least for me. Installed MW 6.51 and got: The "MAPI32.DLL" error mess which I fixed by doing the following: (Note: everything worked fine on my XP Pro machine - this solution is for my Win98SE machine)

Copied my existing MAPI32.Dll to MW 6.51 after renaming the MW's existing MAPI32.DLL OLD. Both versions are 1.0.2536.0 - BUT- the MW file version adds (XPClient.010817.1148) after 1.0.2536.0 - and - its size is 109KB while my version's size is 128KB. (Interesting sidelight: these dll version sizes on my XP Pro machine 128KB - MW 6.51 109KB. Go figure.) NOTE: Supplemental Information 8.3.09 - Deleted MAPI32.DLL entirely and everything still works fine.

After resolving the MAPI32 issue, I installed the QuickReplyUseOld.reg patch and Quick Rely now works on my Win98SE machine. Oops! Now I get: "MAILWASHER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff886df" Intermittently. Who is the head programmer for this application: Larry, Curly or Moe?

NOTE: Supplemental Information 8.3.09 - With IE returned to its original state and the above message apparently tied to a video/memory management issue, I found that by emptying IE cache ( I use CCleaner) before opening MW QuickReply works. We'll see if this approach ends in a Oops! Stay tuned... Well, it did work, for a while. Now I get:
"MAILWASHER caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:41302544"

See beginning of post for the "REAL!?" solution.

If this helps - great.

Thanks very much to rr1165 for his post. My old version had been working just fine on my Win98SE machine and had not bothered to update until now. I updated and MW would no longer start, giving the Mapi32.dll and kernel32.dll errors. I did his procedure to move the older Mapi32.dll file into the MW folder and it worked. Thanks again
