Exporting settings to new computer (MWP 6.3)

Hi

Whats the best way to move all my settings and account info from an XP machine to my new Vista one?

I found that XP has info stored in the registry at
HKCU\Software\Firetrust\Mailwasher Pro\Prefs\
HKCU\Software\Firetrust\Mailwasher Pro\Prefs\Account and
HKCU\Software\Firetrust\Mailwasher Pro\Prefs\Accounts
whilst Vista only has
HKCU\Software\Firetrust\Mailwasher Pro\Prefs\ (no Account or Accounts sub-folders)
in the registry. Instead the account info is in a file
prefs.txt located in the folder displayed on the
MWP>Help>About>Data Directory dialogue.

As you probably know, it is a typing intensive task to re-enter 10 email accounts into MW. Its a shame MW options doesn't make that easier by allowing one to copy and edit entries instead of having to cut'n'paste the common data.

There's a small backup utility that should work, it's a little rough though

has a BackUp button, which you push.....that copies necessary contents (files and registry settings) to C:\MWP_backup... then run the same program on the new machine with the files copied across to the same folder mentioned above, push the Restore button

That's great news thank you. Is there also a version that works the other way round, i.e. vista to xp?

I've catered for that....it detects what OS is installed and moves the files into the right Application Data paths

I tried your program, and all I get is an error. So, why did I want to use this program to start with? Well, I use Eudora and for some reason Eudora will change it's Eudora.ini and my settings get messed up. What I did in that case was to make eudora.ini read only. For some reason, my mailwasher's settings get messed up, ie, my preview gets turned off, my filters side bar get turned on... you get the idea... is there an ini file I can make read only?

Something else must be causing that...how often does this happen that you lose your viewing settings ?
Do you also lose your account information in MailWasher, or does that keep ?

Well, I don't want to point fingers, but usually I'm home on weekends and those settings remain... but during the week while I'm at work they seem to change - you get the idea... That's why setting Eudora's ini file to "read only" works well for me... have you any suggestions???

When you use the machine during the working week, is it getting rebooted whereas the weekend it's pretty much on the whole time ?


I was also thinking it being a System Restore being run, but that would mean someone would have to run that on your machine while you were at work, and I can't think of a valid reason for that either.

I would first set MW to how you like it, then Exit the program using File >> Exit. That way your changes are being saved. There isn't a way I know of to stop MailWasher from saving it's settings (which it does in the Registry rather than an INI file)

I usually don't show the filter side bar and the mail preview. The rest of the settings don't change. Of course, I couldn't remember every filter setting - but I suspect they are being modified since that is usually showing when I get home after work. You know, as a matter of fact... Holly cow! There seems to be a large number of filters - more than I ever needed... This is funny... I really need to discuss this with her mom...

Not really, but then I would personally set her up her own logon to the computer, so that way any changes made don't effect your settings. So if she wants to use MailWasher the program is still there for her, but all the settings are per your user logons. That would also help for any other programs as well, if you put a password on your logon too it's more protected against snooping eyes

You know... that's a good idea - but I don't have anything to hide, but she obviously does... as long as she doesn't land me in jail, I really don't care how "easy" she gets... Maybe I really don't want to know... lol

I'm trying to move my MailWasher Pro 6.3 settings from a WinXP MediaCenter SP3 computer to a new WinVista Business SP1 laptop.

When I run bumailwasherproxp.exe version 3.2.12.1 Backup on the WinXP machine, I get a Registry Editor error "Cannot export C:\MWP_backup\firetrust.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

Is there any resolution for this error?

Sadly no, I never figured out why it was sometimes failing when doing this

To do it manually....

If you click Start >> Run >> type REGEDIT and click OK >> then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FireTrust\MailWasher Pro and with MailWasher Pro highlighted click File >> Export. Give the file a name and save location.

Then copy the file across to the Vista machine and run it and answer Yes to import into the Windows Registry
