Mail washer not working? Or am I doing something wrong?

Sun Jul 23, 2023 6:44 pm

v had my email address for 20 years now so naturally it is on every spam mailing list known to man. I have recently been looking at IMAP spam filters to filter my entire email account across all devices.

I came across mail washer which I decided to try for 2 reasons, 1) it has a free version so I can try before I buy type thing and 2) it's not a cloud based service, as I run my own home server for verious other things I like being able to host it myself.

Now iv been using it for almost 3 weeks and it has kodi detected 0 spam even though I get about 5 spam emails in my inbox a day. I have manually marked emails as good or spam aswell and it still seems to not be able to detect any spam.

So at this point I am unsure if mail washer is just rubbish or if I have not set it up correctly or if my use case is just invalid due to lack of knowledge. So what I want to know from anyone that has experience with mail washer / IMAP spam filters is:

Am I right in thinking IMAP spam filters can run independently and filter your email account for you. Becuase I imagine it would just work as any IMAP client and read / move / delete all on the server so I should see the changes on all devices. Example, spam comes in, the spam filter receives it, detects it, deletes it. I should not have that email in my inbox on my phone or pc it should be in deleted (I am aware I may still get notifications if they all receive it at the same time then the spam filter does its actions)

And does mail washer require time to build its own database or should it use a global one and start working instantly?

I hope that all makes sense, if you require any more information or clarification, please just ask.

Thanks,

Update: Thanks now working well :D

Yes, when you install MW, you need to manually mark all emails as either good or spam for it's learning to start working, ("working" means some emails would be marked as either good (green) or spam (red) upon initial mail check) if you have been doing this for those 5 or so emails per day, after 3 weeks yes, it should definitely be marking some as good or spam itself.

Also, you posted this in the MWpro 5 or 6 forum, check under Help>>About and let us know which version you are using there please? as the 5 or 6.xx version is quite different to the current 7.xx version....

IF you are using MWpro 7, (which I would expect) ensure that under Settings>>Spam Tools>>Learning Settings, "Enable Learning" IS checked/ticked.

If it is, yes, it is odd then that the learning is not catching anything yet.... anyway, let us know how the above goes first,

And yes, the basics of what Mailwasher does is this.

When someone sends you an email it is first received by your Internet Service Providers email server. It is held there until you start up your email
program, (Outlook, or some other program) which then looks on this server and downloads all your email, spam or not.

What Mailwasher does is to log onto that email server and download just a small text only portion of each email. This lets you look at each one and
see if it is a spam or a real email. You can then choose to delete or keep the email and when you use your email program to download your email, all
the spam has already been deleted.

Normally this is how you would use Mailwasher Pro with your email program,

* Open MailWasher
* Click, Check Mail,
* Mark your email for deletion or keeping,
* Click Wash Mail,
* Then you open, (or Mailwasher Opens ) your email program,
* Click Send/Receive in there to check for new mail like normal.

Note also, you can click Help>>Help Topics in MWPro to see details on how to use MWPro.

And you can see the startup tutorial via View>>Tutorial Video from within MWPro also.

I have had this issue on and off for a while, if I don't do a 'wash' and run MW again the 'old' mails (marked for delete, e.g. ) are still there but marked as 'empty'

Investigating the issue, I restarted 'enable learning' but the screen just 'hung'

Am I doing something wrong?

IF you use POP, try going into Settings >> Accounts, click the problem account, Incoming >> uncheck Store Cached Email >> Save >> restart MailWasher.

If no better, or you use IMAP, please clear the cache.

To do this, click Settings>>Checking Mail, click the “Clear Cache” button. (Note that this is disabled until the current Mail check has completed)

During this process the inbox mail grid will be cleared, (NO emails will be deleted from the actual mail server though) and when process finished, the mail check will start for default accounts.

If still no good, probably the best option here is to try deleting the problem email accounts and re-importing them....

(First though, click File>>Export and save a copy of your settings to file for a backup)

Please open Mailwasher Pro and click, Settings>>Accounts, click your account and click, "Remove Account", click, "Yes, remove it", repeat for other account, close and restart Mailwasher Pro.

In Mailwasher Pro click, Settings>>Accounts "Import Account" and follow the directions.

If there are no amounts listed, cancel to exit this screen and click, Add Account, choose your account type and add account manually.

Full directions are available for this from here:

Mailwasher Pro >> Help >> Help Topics >> Settings Screen >> Accounts

Settings available here (for many ISP's but not private domains) if you need them: http://www.emailsettings.email/

Please let me know how you get on there.
