6.5.4 HOW can the program tie up 85 megs of RAM?

Sat Nov 15, 2014 8:48 am

I'm using 6.5.4. HOW can this program tie up 85 megs of RAM?

I haven't upgraded since 6.5.4 because I like owning software, not paying yearly rental on it.

The 6.5.4 is the lightest MWP:--

Mine slowly gets larger, the longer I leave it open. It started at 16 megs this morning, and is now 47 megs. And more incoming spams seem to increase it faster.

Yeah if you leave 6.5.4 running for extended periods of time then I believe the RAM usage will creep, if I recall it was the way it managed the bayesian files being updated when you trained emails as it keeps this in memory only updating the written files on exit. Also too, just having large volumes of email will cause larger memory footprints.

If you have the spare RAM and the system isn't fighting itself for available memory, then this won't be an issue. If however you do find it running quite low, then I'd just recommend daily restarts of MailWasher.

Perhaps the program could manage it better?

Yeah the updating of Bayesian on exit wasn't probably the best design choice. Apart from that though, I always thought this flavour of MailWasher was quite good with it's memory.

One thing you could try, if go into Help >> About >> open the link to where MW stores the data files >> close MailWasher >> back in the folder you opened to into the Training folder >> delete the file TrainingMA.dat >> restart MailWasher.

MailWasher will rebuild this file on startup next time, it may take a few minutes, but see if that helps reduce the memory usage.

Weird. Through normal use it did this ? And also have you restarted MailWasher since it had to rebuild the files ?

What I would try first, assuming you've restarted MW a couple of times, is just repeat the process and see if there's different results.

If not though, and it's annoying, but I might be inclined to just wipe the whole Training folder and start that fresh. Mean though have to retrain MW on which emails are good and bad though, but 300+ isn't acceptable at all

I would also ensure that the security system has been configured to exclude MWP from any sort of real-time scanning.

It makes a great deal of difference if the following MWP installation directory is not subjected to incessant scanning:--
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Firetrust\MailWasher Pro
MWP 7 disabled from the cloud (ßeta) | Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) | The Bat! Professional (ßeta) | Windows Firewall Control (WFC) | NOD32 EAV (ßeta) | Intel® HD Graphics 3000 | Internet Connection Speed (D=50 Mb/s U=3.5 Mb/s) | .NET Framework (4.7.1)

I don't even see any security system options.

The security system comprises of:--
  • AntiVirus
  • Anti Spyware
  • Firewall
  • HIPS
  • Anti Executable
  • Anti Malware, etc., etc.

Oh ok, thanks.

I'm using Malware Bytes and BitDefender here. Seems like scanning incoming emails would be important, no?

Scanning e-mails is not such a wise idea. :no

How come? Don't they sometimes come with viruses?
