In "settings" I'm given a choice of "hotmail", "other app" or "web mail". I previously set microsoft Mail as my default email program. When I select "other app" I get a confusing menu with no indication of how to set Mail as my go-to email program.

Try running attached file, run the .REG and answer Yes to import into Registry. Restart MailWasher and see if it then displays Mail for Windows as a selectable program.

You'd have to ask Microsoft that one. For reasons that aren't clear they don't register Mail for Windows as a mail program.

@rustigdog, they don't register ANY email program except for hotmail! Something's weird. And surely this is a mailwasher issue, not a microsoft one.

Did the registry patch work ?

MailWasher loads the list of clients installed from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\

Could also try this :
Go to Mailwasher>>Settings>>General>>Washing Mail, and then select 'Use Other Application' from the drop down menu, then copy and paste this line below in to the text area that appears. Click Save

Code: Select all

"C:\Windows\explorer.exe" "shell:AppsFolder\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe!microsoft.windowslive.mail"

Sorry, also did not work. But at least the program didn't freeze & required re-installation as happened when I typed in "Mail".

And just to confirm, running the .REG path, restarting MailWasher, Mail For Windows does not then appear in the list of email programs to choose from ?

As i said, I'm reluctant to make mods in the register.

I have solved the problem by installing Outlook. I was so pleased to see that I could install & run my old Outlook 2003 software. As usual, Microsoft managed to screw up Office with every new rev. IMO.

Thanks for your persistence, it's very much appreciated.

OK good, Outlook is a better mail program than the Windows 10 Mail App as well :)

Agreed! I hated W10 Mail from the beginning - am an old OE man myself and Outlook acts a lot like OE.
I was very pleasantly surprised to see that W10 allowed me to load Office 2003 and also my old and trusted Acrobat 8! Thanks again for your help.
