Mozilla Thunderbird doesn't clear server after reading mail

Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:34 am

Hi,

I've just converted over from Outlook which completely screwed up on me. Thunderbird finding and downloading from mail server but doesn't seem to clean up the server when finished. As a result Mailwasher 2011 seems to be building up and building up with emails I've already downloaded.

I can't have set something right - anyone any idea.

Don't get too technical - I understand most things but have my limitations!!!

The setting at the red arrow, there is a setting for each account so change them all.

You might have to do one cleanup in MW after you change that setting to get the last of the old mail off the system.

Hi Stan,

I am using Thunderbird 3.1.9 and my screen equivalent is below

Image

That shows the setting I have just now - it is totally different to yours.

However, I have a new problem. When I link MW2011 to Thunderbird they seem to be totally attached. If I delete a message from my MW2011 it also deletes the message from my Thunderbird Inbox. Luckily I can recover from the Recycle bin.

There are things happening here that I didn't need to know when using Outlook. I always thought I was using a POP server for my incoming email and an SMTP server for outgoing. I have no idea what an IMAP server is, no idea what the port number means and no idea what STARTTLS does.

I really need to get away from Outlook and want to use MW2011 - it is a fantastic program.

Any insight would be useful to help me use MW2011 to wash my mail and then transfer across to Thunderbird as I am used to with Outlook. The answer is there, I just can't see it!

Looking forward with anticipation to your answer

I'd say much of your confusion is coming from using IMAP instead of POP, IMAP is very complicated to use and understand since it involves leaving the mail on the server and accessing it from your programs and then trying to keep what is shown in sync as the various programs change it. POP by comparison keeps your mail in your mail program, not on the server and once you have it downloaded it is safe from deletion by other programs or net gremlins.

I'd suggest going to your ISP's mail setup page and getting the settings for POP access, then change both MW ant TB to use pop and match the other settings to your ISP's requirements and you should be much less frustrated.
