While I appreciate your thoughtfulness Racker (in providing such a thorough explanation), I didn't need to watch the clip. Got done reading as far as the above portion of your post and that was far enough. :facepalm Especially since our particular spelling forms seem to be at cross-purposes. :whip :flame :leghump :nono :devil :devil

<innocent>Is that so?? :tongueout </innocent> ;) OK... but I DO think, this is one of the most hilarious scenes from Rat Race. This film really is a must-see if you like absurd and rather black humor.. 8)

Yeah well, while "absurd" is a good word for it I really don't think that much of humor that has to get up and "slap you in the kisser" in order to be funny. Actually while I admit to being a "Born Smart-ass", I prefer the more subtle forms of humor where inference is a required element of it and you actually have to use your brain to get the humor. Just like all the word play you and I have been parlaying with in this thread. :thumbsup :devil

I like both the absurdist Monty Python- like humor (John Cleese for President! ) and the more subtile "word play".. English being your native tongue and not mine, the latter kinda' makes me feel like the famous one- eyed king, taking a trip out of his "kingdom of the blind". But then again.. does that really matter?? ;)

As bad as the vast majority of the current crop of political candidates are I can both understand your comment about John Cleese and almost agree with it. Problem is though that he's not eligible to run. Not born a US citizen. :dunno And about the one-eyed king biz, no I don't think it does matter at this point. :facepalm :devil

You know you’re from Christchurch when...

* Geonet / ChristchurchQuakeMap is your homepage
* The rest of the country offers you a place to stay
* “Munted” and “buggered” are official technical terms
* You go 'pfffff' when Wellington has a 4.5 earthquake that's 40km deep
* You see a nice park in another city and think it would make a good evacuation point
* You sleep in one suburb, shower in another and collect water from yet another
* When you drive on the right side of the road no one thinks it's wrong
* You are happy two Policemen came for a visit
* When your bike becomes your best friend
* You think it's fine for a soldier to be stationed at the end of your street
* You see armoured vehicles driving down the road
* It’s normal to greet people with “do you need a shower?”
* A bucket of shit is no longer that old car you drive
* Every house is a crack house
* Instead of rushing to the clothes line to get clothes in when it rains, you put dirty washing on the line in the hope that it will rain enough to clean them
* Going to Wellington to escape earthquakes makes sense
* Your doctor recommends having a few stiff drinks before bed to help you sleep
* You know how to start and refuel a generator
* You have tied the pantry, liquor cabinet and all the cupboard doors closed and it's not to keep kids out
* You prefer to sit under the table instead of at it
* You think electronics that have "shock proof" should say to which earthquake magnitude
* You know and actually understand the terms and conditions of your House and Contents insurance policies
* You can see irony in claims about houses made of “permanent materials”
* Your en-suite has a vege garden, dog kennel and grass
* Your teenagers are only too happy to sleep in the same room as their parents
* You stop using the term “built like a brick shit house”
* Dressing up to "head into town" means putting on a hi-viz vest, hard hat and boots
* Discussing toilet habits with total strangers is an everyday norm
* Wee boys don't get excited when they see (another) digger or a dozer - but all the adults in the street cheer wildly
* Voluntarily staying in Timaru for five days seems like a good idea
* You know what that extra gear lever on your 4X4 is for
* Metservice includes a graph for dust
* You have dust mask tan lines
* You can use the term "liquefaction" in everyday casual conversation, even your 3-year old can
* When a massive group of students appears in your street, you feel overwhelmed with gratitude instead calling the Police. What’s more, the students leave the street in better condition than when they arrived
* The answer to where anything is ... it’s on the floor
* You smile at strangers and greet people like you’re one big family

@RD Your post would be hilarious if it wasn't such real world where you are. I check in periodically on the CC Shake Rattle and Roll web sites and I'm totally blown away by the frequency and magnitude of the ongoing "after shocks". Has it always been like this in CC?

Mom liked the list, she was really upset of the pictures of the city that she enjoyed visiting so much being badly torn up. She liked the home-made bathrooms site too, she started out her life with one in her back yard and being told to save the yellow catalog index pages for company. :-)

Nah, the last earthquake of significance in this region that I remember was about 20 years ago. We get an occasional small earthquake pretty much anywhere in NZ, on average an earthquake between 4.0-5.0 will happen once a day. We're up to 5000? aftershocks since September's quake over magnitude 2.0?....February's quake is apparently a new event not an aftershock...either way, we've got 1-2 years more of aftershocks to look forward too.

Some good after photos of city centre here, not exactly sure when taken, but URL says 27th April and it looks like many of the cars are cleared, so that could be right. A lot of these buildings are still in the red zone, so no general public allowed.

It's mind boggling! The contrast between those structures that are totally destroyed and some that appear to have much less damage. The pictures are amazing. TKS for the post.

I sent them on to mom, she was touring down there a couple years back and is really sad to see all the neat places and historical stuff in such bad shape.

*sigh*....here we go again....

Had two decent aftershocks today, a 5.5. followed by a 6. Plenty of liquefaction again, everything pretty much closing down, but no fatalities so far. A few pics here http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/c ... ristchurch
