Sorry to hear you're at it again ... :facepalm
Glad to hear that at least so far everybody's alive. Hope there aren't too many injured. And also hope it stays that way. :thumbsup

Don't know what else to say except maybe you all should move into a tent. :scratch :crazy ;) At least that'd be both portable and easily re-set up.

How are you all on winter camping???? :scratch :scratch :devil

Ay! Carumba! :facepalm

I hear there was a third as well, a little after the 6.0. According to USGS it was a 4.6.

Anybody for a rock-n-roll lullaby??????? :snore ;)

Winter camping ?...is that like a 2 star cabin some place :)

We've had quite a few today, but anything under 5 isn't an issue...a quick search on the GeoNet website says we've had around 30 between 4-5 magnitude in the last 4 months. We've still got power here so all good, gonna be a bunch of cold folk tonight though, it's supposed to get down to 1 degree tonight....that's 34F to you weirdos

I just heard about the new quakes. I hope the team members and their families are all okay, along with the friends and neighbors and pets.

Did I leave anybody out?

The rats living in my roof ?

Sadly no, they haven't done so well, however it was the copious amount of poison that did that, not the earthquake.

All family and friends are well, not heard anything bad. As far as I know most of the building collapses we've had were all red stickered already, current rumour is around 50 buildings in the central city have either collapsed or significantly damaged...who knows, maybe this will help speed up some of the demolition work required.

Glad to hear everyone is OK!

(Seismic eruptions expected here in my neck of the woods for the next several days, after the Mavs won their first, long-overdue NBA National Championship!)

Stay safe,

Had two decent aftershocks today, a 5.5. followed by a 6. Plenty of liquefaction again, everything pretty much closing down, but no fatalities so far. A few pics here http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/c ... ristchurch

Heh...nope, we've got plenty of blunders going on. I think we're up to 300,000 claims now....unprecedented by our standards. You can be sure there's going to be many human and bureaucratic screw ups.

I thought part of the problem is that they are in the lowlands, not far above the water table, so everything turns to quicksand during an earthquake.

Yeah we're at sea level, a lot of eastern Christchurch is on some soft ground and we've got a bunch of small faults that are very close. We're on (well, right beside) an extinct volcano too, which if I recall means that in some cases the seismic waves bounce off the volcanic rock back toward the city ? ...something like that anyway.

There is the belief that we've got probably 2 years of decent aftershocks, the science types are looking at other data from around the world, but it's only San Francisco I think that shares some common patterns, but apparently too the patterns were seeing are also quite new so there's a lot of attention being paid to what's going on. If the numbers are right we've had 7400 quakes over magnitude 2 since the September 7.1 quake, which doesn't really sound very common.

A few weeks ago, we were told based on the data modelling....
That will make us the centre of attention for study for seismic activity for a long time. It’s now thought that we are looking at a longer term seismic series. (The latest guess is apparently that we have a 23% chance within the next year of a shake between 6 and 7 on the Richter scale, and dropping to 10% over the next 2 years. There is a chance of over 90% that we will have another shake between 5 and 6 in the next twelve months, dropping to over 70% in that two year horizon. Nobody was able to answer questions about Mercalli scale or g-force or depth so you can take those figures for what they’re worth. What we are seemingly certain of is that you shouldn’t put your blu-tac away just yet.)
Since then we've had one quake between 6-7 and four between 5-6

@RD - definitely sounds like "Terra Non-Firma"
With that kind of forecast I would think it would impede most companies/developers from mounting a rebuild effort.
