Wow.. that's almost increadible! Such transformation. Just hope there'll be a prominent place for small shops too, after restructuring; afterall they're the ones that make the difference in atmosphere in citycenters. If it'd mostly be major chainstores you'd end up with one of those cheerless, interchangable shoppingmalls you find in too many places already... :dead
Yeah, agreed! :thumbsup

Saw the midday TV news today with a report on the cathedral. It seems the C of E have decided it will not be rebuilt - it was such a beautiful building before that fateful day.

Sounds like they're spending 4 million on a partial demolition to make it safe and pull out all the....artefacts?...then it's probably a 30 million dollar rebuild...so if they can get the money it'll get the treatment. I find it hard to think the Anglican Church is strapped for cash ;)

Some rich British fella, Hamish Ogston, donated 4 million some months ago towards the Cathedral rebuild, so it's probably not a big ask to get that kind of money together.

A neat picture that's been tinkered (HDR'd...whatever that is :) ) to look pretty awesome. On the right that's the Grand Chancellor, the 26 story building which is having to be demolished floor by floor....

Yeah, I agree. The Church (Catholic, Anglican, ...) is only "strapped" when THEY look at their expenses. But then they're always wearing those rose-colored blinders too! :facepalm  :?

From what I've just seen (short Roman holiday... wow, great city!) the Roman Catholics could help their Anglican brethern to the remaining 40 million w/o even the blink of an eye. Between the wealth we've seen displayed in all of those churches and chapels, who'd miss a golden candlestick or two, hmm?! :devil

In shocking contrast to that: I don't think I have seen so many old folk begging (mostly on the tresholds of those churches, but also on almost every other streetcorner) in any other European city I've visited..... :dead

The thing I keep thinking about is, earthquake in Chile, earthquake in NZ, earthquake in Japan -- one more side of the Ring of Fire that hasn't responded to the movement of the plate. Maybe the unusual earthquake activity in the Midwest and East Coast is absorbing some of the energy? I doubt the west coast of the US/Canada/Mexico is built as well to resist earthquakes as Japan, and the tsunami still devastated them.

In a scene that could have been written by Douglas Adams, a Foo Fighters gig in Auckland in quake-prone New Zealand has shown up on seismic monitoring stations.

New Zealand’s geological hazard monitoring system GeoNet described the signal from the band (and its 50,000-strong audience) as similar to volcanic rumblings.

GeoNet revealed that two seismic stations which are 1.5 and 2 km away from the from the location of the concert, in Western Springs, recorded a strong low frequency signal during the event.

GeoNet believes that that cause of the tremors was not only a muscular sound system but the weight of the 50,000 fans dancing - a 5,000 tonne mosh-pit hammering the ground for the duration of the concert.
I had visions of the entire audience sinking into a liquefied field as the band plays on. Going to outdoor concerts in NZ requires some intestinal fortitude!
