If I set the 'read' column to display, all incoming mails are automatically given the black dot treatment, whether or NOT they have been read or even looked at within the preview screen.
Does the column have any 'control' settings that I am not aware of?
'Read' column is never blank ... so what use is it?

Under Settings >> Display >> Inbox >> there's an option to Display Unread Emails in Bold, that might need to be checked.

No - that merely marks everything in bold, Fido - including those from way back.
But what DOES work is to click to change the "read" blob's form when selecting a message for a defined period - I have mine for 3 seconds, and it WORKS.
But the core issue, where I began, seems to be a minor failing within the software, doesn't it?

Yeah it's not saving between restarts, no idea when that happened. Will add to the fix list.

Re: 'Read' column is never blank ... so what use is it?
It seems to work backwards to me.
That is, the "Read" column is telling me which emails I have NOT read yet.
If I view an email, as soon as I move on to (highlight) the another email, that Read dot on the first email changes from black to gray.
Since displaying unread emails in bold works the same way, and is more visible, I don't need that column. I already display more than the default settings so disabling it saves me space too.
