Some emails unidentifiable in MWP

Wed Nov 11, 2020 6:31 pm

I've recently started receiving emails with no info in the 'From' or 'Subject' fields. That makes it impossible to identify the source and legitimacy of the messages in MWP. Enabling the 'Domain' and 'From Email' columns did not help either.

What other info can you dig out of the big headers to identify the source? I can poke around in there and maybe spot something whilst still in MWP, but my wife is not that adventurous or geeky so she needs a button or column in the GUI.

So far these naked emails have only come from JB HiFi and Woolworths. They do show relevant identifying info in Thunderbird, so I think you need to figure out how to get that happening in MWP. Please.

The number of these emails with no info displaying in MWP has increased to six in only a couple of days. I've written filters to identify the senders. I assume this is some new service that's being sold to businesses. The impact on MWP will be a big turn-off for non-technical users that just want to avoid all the evil stuff :help

The issue is that MailWasher doesn't scan enough of the header data to identify these fields. In the old days this was OK, as headers were never really more than 150 lines.

We then encountered problems with spammers inserting tens of thousands of garbage lines into headers, so what we did was impose a hard limit where MailWasher will only scan the first 300 lines of the header then stop, otherwise MailWasher would be trying to pump these thousands of junk lines which impacted processing time greatly.

Now, it seems ordinary headers are just getting massive, and as a result MailWasher isn't scanning enough lines, and fields like Subject and From are down 400 lines into an email header.

We do have a fix planned for that, all you can try in the interim is to go in Settings >> General >> Checking Mail >> and be sure the Spam Throttle is at least 350 lines, 500 is probably best.

Try this beta version if the above didn't help, it'll install fine over the top.

Is this beta one we all should try? I have "Accuracy set to 410 (5 accounts simulaneously), and it's a noticeably slower process on the first mail check of the day (or after a computer restart).

Just sent them. I noticed something in the drop-down for the first time - "Log Protocol." It was unchecked.

Yup, leave that unchecked. It adds extra logging we sometimes like to have, but better to have it off otherwise it increases the load on MailWasher.

For the problem, if you go into Settings >> General >> Checking Mail >> Set MailWasher to check just 2 or 3 accounts at once, restart the program, does that seem to make any difference ?

There are some large pauses of a few seconds every now and again, and I wonder if MailWasher is trying to do too much at once.

And yes, you can install the .45 beta from the link above too.

Changing setting to 3 accounts is a bit faster. Installed the .46, seems even faster. Thanks for the Log Protocol info.
