Using Gmail

Wed May 03, 2023 7:58 am

Can a Gmail account, without using Oauth, be successfully set up in MailWasher Pro 7.12.125?

I can login into Gmail and access the Inbox so I know I have the correct login credentials. Also, I've extracted the IMAP settings from Gmail.

I've read about and tried multiple setups but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Yes, MWPro has always worked with gmail, however yes, google have decided to block all non email clients from accessing mail, and that includes MWPro.... (all versions) the only way around this is to use 2 step authentication and use an app password in MW, Nick has added this to our FAQ's recently here:

(NOTE: oauth support for gmail coming soon.....)

https://www.firetrust.com/products/mail ... quirements

There is a .pdf file of this process here if required:

Once you have enabled 2 step authentication and setup an app password, here's how to setup the account in MWPro:

Open MWPro and click, Settings>>Accounts>>Add Email Account, enter a name for the account and your Gmail email address, click Save.
On the Incoming tab enter your Gmail app password you created earlier and click Save again.

Any problems, please let me know.

Hello,

I using Mailwasher on a PC not a mobile I've tried following this advice completed setting up the 2 step verification.

But their appears to be no way to tell Goggle to allow Mailwasher access, and no way for Mailwasher to request it
because Google wont allow it access!!

Which is a tad frustrating because I bought Mailwasher specifically to look at two Gmail accounts, which by the way, Thunderbird has issues with connecting to.

Any advice wld be helpful.

Thank you

Hi Harry,
Yes, the only way MW can access gmail is via the third party app password I added a post about above, enabling 2-Step-Verification is not enough by itself, after doing that, only then can you setup an app password.....

NOTE: this bit directly from google help:
Sign in with app passwords
Tip: App passwords aren’t recommended and are unnecessary in most cases. To help keep your account secure, use "Sign in with Google" to connect apps to your Google Account.

An app password is a 16-digit passcode that gives a less secure app or device permission to access your Google Account. App passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on.

When to use app passwords
Tip: iPhones and iPads with iOS 11 or up don’t require app passwords. Instead use “Sign in with Google.”

If the app doesn’t offer “Sign in with Google,” (NOTE: this is coming to MW soon) you can either:

* Use app passwords
* Switch to a more secure app or device
* Create & use app passwords
Important: To create an app password, you need 2-Step Verification on your Google Account.

If you use 2-Step-Verification and get a "password incorrect" error when you sign in, you can try to use an app password.

* Go to your Google Account.
* Select Security.
* Under "Signing in to Google," select 2-Step Verification.
* At the bottom of the page, select App passwords.
* Enter a name that helps you remember where you’ll use the app password.
* Select Generate.
* To enter the app password, follow the instructions on your screen. The app password is the 16-character code that generates on your device.
* Select Done.
* If you’ve set up 2-Step Verification but can’t find the option to add an app password, it might be because:

Your Google Account has 2-Step Verification set up only for security keys.
You’re logged into a work, school, or another organization account.
Your Google Account has Advanced Protection.
Tip: Usually, you’ll need to enter an app password once per app or device.
Here's a screenshot of what MW's settings should look like also:

If still problems, and if your settings within MW are correct, yet it still cannot connect, this usually means one of the following.

1.) that your app password is wrong.

2.) you have not yet enabled 2-Step-Verification on the gmail security settings page,
(MW needs this enabled to work with gmail accounts due to changes on gmails end)

https://myaccount.google.com/security

3.) POP and/or IMAP access is disabled for the gmail account, ensure these are enabled here:
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/fwdandpop

4.) Your web browser is incorrectly reporting that 2-Step-Verification is ON, when it is really OFF.... try logging into your gmail account via another web browser, then go here in that browser:

https://myaccount.google.com/security

Scroll down and sure 2-Step-Verification is really on.

Aside from that, the only other option is to change your gmail password, use that new password in MWPro, and see if that helps....?
Note also, that after changing your password, you need to first log off gmail within your web browser, restart your PC, then open your
web browser and log back into gmail and re-enable 2-Step-Verification.

I think my problem lay here, I had set up 2 step verification earlier, and could not get it it work. But now re entering my Gmail I have no problem.

So thanks for the tip
