Why does MW display archived and sent messages in GMAIL?

I'm a bit confused though.

Are you saying that I should set up a filter on MW that moves the emails to a particular folder? Or that I should set up a filter on gmail that moves the emails to a particular folder (ie applies a label)?

No Firetrust need to add the feature to MWP as at the moment you cannot move mail to a different folder

So, ultimately at the moment there's nothing I can do that will enable me to completely delete the messages without seeing whether or not there are any there? At some point, I'm going to have to see them?

For your specific problem, if you can set up a filter in GMail to mark them as spam then MWP will properly delete any mail in the Gmail/[Google Mail]/Spam folder, if you have it selected in the Accounts IMAP tab in MWP

Then using a filter with auto-delete in the Action >> "Override delete" will ensure you don't see then in the MWP inbox

MWP will re-evaluate spam in the GMail spam folder and only mark email for delete that it deems spam, also you will see emails in the MWP inbox.

I find this useful to double check that GMail is not spamming stuff that is not spam

Any emails left in the GMail spam folder after processing can then be moved to the GMail inbox (or any other folder) via Webmail or your email client.

There's a solution if one uses an email client instead of logging in to Gmail to view the messages.
This is what works for me:-
01.) Configure your Gmail account for POP3 retrieval through MailWasher Pro and
02.) Configure Gmail to delete it's own copy (as illustrated below):-

FYI, That solution does not work if you want to keep backup copies on Gmail or you want to process folders other than the Inbox ie Spam folder.

Of course not - at this premature stage of under-development of the IMAP algorithm, how can one expect to eat one's cake and have it too. BTW, the OP has not stipulated that he needs to keep copies on Gmail or to be able to process folders other than the Inbox.

On the contrary, given his very pressing requirement I've tried this workaround by switching from IMAP to POP3 and the solution works for me.

I switched MW to POP mode for accessing Gmail and am perfectly happy with the way it is working, I get to dump the spam quickly and with little effort and save the folder style access for Webmail access.

I'm the same, I much prefer POP access in MailWasher and IMAP access in the email program.
