OK all done, Driver 8.650 to 8.753.........and the numbers are still there.
Will try unloading and reloading now.
No, that did not cure the problem.
Something else of interest, when first loaded we get the smaller 'How to Use Mailwasher' pop up window showing typical incoming....well the number is even next the X on that.

Re: 2010 with Proper English option
You're not running some sort of FPS counter/screen capture app (like FRAPS) then it could be counting the redraw rate of MailWasher.

OK, try running the EXE inside this, GridTest.exe
Do you get the same numbers ? If so, you've definitely got something third party doing this, maybe something related to ATI, but definitely not us

Try booting your PC in "safe mode with networking" and see if the numbers go away, if they do then run MSCONFIG and see what is loading at boot time.

Re: 2010 with Proper English option
The Grid Test app has the numbers as per Mailwasher.
I do not get these numbers with any other application running on this comp. But they do dissapear when the ATI driver is removed so it is ATI related.
I dont run ATI CC software but do use a 3rd party app called ATI Tray Tools by Richard Adams. This was due to CC tools not having the correct res for my monitor at the time. I will do some juggling with it.
Yes, it IS this little app that is doing the dirty.

I have now disabled Tray Tools, restarted and all is well.
thanks everyone for all the help on this problem.
