Lost Email

Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:02 am

Good day,
We've been using MW for years. I recently upgraded to MW 2010. Imported white/black list from previous MW, adjusted settings, etc. in apticipation of upgrading all of our workstations. We run XPpro sp3, with AVAST Pro v 5.0.594 for antivirus. We use ACT Premium 2009's internet email client, and have a couple of email accounts (each on different domains owned by us) for each user. We have been using this setup and MW versions for years with no trouble.

Since I upgraded my workstation to MW 2010, I'm experiencing the following:

Check Mail via MW - OK
Update sender status as needed - OK
Delete unwanted emails - OK
Wash mail to purge unwanted email from server - seems OK (listed emails all dissappear)
Open ACT email client to get email washed by MW - not OK.

No email gets imported into the ACT email client, and it apperas that MW has beleted all email. Going directly to our mail server, the messages are gone. Obviously, this is a big problem for us. My only option is to try and remember who had sent me emails and request that they re-send, which does not work for the bid servers.

1. I understand that the MW file "MWP.db3" contains deleted emails. Is there some particular MW 2010 setting that I need to adjust to eliminate the possibility of MW deleting wanted email?

2. Is there a way to recover the deleted emails from the MWP/db3 file?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tom

Do the messages appear in the MailWasher Recycle Bin ? If not, I'd be very surprised if MailWasher was somehow removing these, despite being new it would have processed millions of emails by now and we've not heard this problem.

If you check again in MailWasher after the deletes, do the messages still show ?

Good day,

When email is identified as spam by MW and deleted, is it sent to the recyclebin or listed in a log?

It should be showing in the Recycle Bin. Please note that only the portion of the message controlled by the Spam Throttle setting e.g. number of lines is actually downloaded (only a copy) from the mail server. When a wash is started the messages marked for deletion in the Inbox will then move the fragment downloaded into the recycle bin and then tell the mail server to delete them. You can restore any message fragment from the recycle bin back to your mail server but only to the extent of the number of lines downloaded. Several of us have found that around 100 lines minimum produce an acceptable rate of spam identification. If you need better indication of attachments then I would suggest 200 lines. You can also go to 999 lines per message which will bring most of the messages in complete form down for evaluation and restore capability but you pay a performance price for doing that.

Any message you delete in MailWasher (spam or not) will end up in the Recycle Bin.

Thanks Sidewinder,

I've adjusted the spam throttle to 400 to see what different that makes.
