Silly Sliders

Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:44 pm

There seems to have been a bit of an oversight when labelling a couple of the sliders that control various options in Settings.

1. Settings > Spam Tools > FirstAlert! > Number of days FirstAlert! results are cached: Accuracy <---> Speed
Shouldn't the slider values be labelled with "0 <---> 14" or similar?

2. Settings > Spam Tools > Origin of Spam > Number of days Spam Origin address is cached: Accuracy <---> Speed
Ditto

Have fun. ;)

I'm confused... What is wrong with the current labels that reflect what the results of setting the slider to that end of the scale will do?

Call me thick, but it isn't immediately obvious to the non-techie user how an Origin of Spam address or FirstAlert! result being cached for less (or even zero) days might improve accuracy. Similarly, how cacheing such results for a longer period might improve speed. Thus the slider labels appear to be inappropriate and might be better replaced by a range of values which represent the number of days in the scale.

While we're at it, Firetrust's address, as it appears on the Paypal confirmation page after purchasing, has a typo in the street name.

Well, that's quite enough meddling from me for one day.

The Origin of Spam speed is improved by not having to a particular address if it is already cached there for the longer the number of days the less checking that has to be done. Since the spammers use of an address is normally a short duration then the shorter the duration the more accurate the tag. Similar behavior related to the content based FA. Descriptors are valid and accurate.

It might not be too clear, perhaps we can improve the Help & Info mouse over text, which on first glance doesn't appear to exist for the Origin of Spam slider.
