Emails are not received on the server unless the puter is on

Sat Aug 21, 2010 4:14 pm

My desktop is plugged directly into the router. My wife's new laptop is in another room. When her laptop is booted up then she gets emails fine from our home network router. But the emails sent to her when the computer is not on are not delivered and held by the server. when her computer is booted up and mail washer turned on there are no emails even though several were sent to her during the night. Any emails sent to her after the computer is up and running will come into MW PRO auto. this is a new computer and it is running a 30 day trial of the NEW MW PRO 10.
HOpe some of you can give me some ideas to check out. I have exhaused 25 years of my experience with computers.
thanks,

First lets try and clear up a few things.
The only way for an email to not be on the server is for someone instructing the server to delete the messages.
That can occur from an email application downloading the messages and subsequently removing them from the server.
That can occur from MWP 2010 but only if they are marked for deletion. Automatically if the settings are configured that way or based on the evaluation of the message or manual input marked for deletion on the next wash cycle.

I can think of a couple of things, regarding what you are describing:
(1) Another person is downloading the messages from the account. I suggest that you change both the account ID and password at your ISP.
(2) Double check your desktop system to make sure it's not your email client or MWP configuration set up for your wife's account.

One further thought.
The general description of your setup would imply that your DT is probably hardwired to you router and your LT is wireless.
If that is correct then you may have a far more serious problem.

(A) It's possible that a hacker is not only using your network facilities but monitoring all your transactions on the wireless side and maybe even your DT.
Hopefully your router was set up with WEP 64 security rather than left wide open or with a less secure level.

If that may be the case then you need to take some immediate actions to secure your network e.g. new encryption key, new router passwords etc. Have both systems checked for monitoring s/w.

The hacker tool are out there and unfortunately being used.

Thanks for posting this issue - it's got my attention.

Sidewinder has already given sound suggestions so I'll try not to cut across / repeat.

Could you please tell us a a bit more about your setup - on both systems? OS's (operating systems), AV (antivirus) program etc - and whether or not you have the latest updates patches for everything?

Plus - I hope you changed the default name and password used by your firewall router. I mean no insult - it's something people overlook (and I've done it myself )

Also, please confirm that the behaviour you described started when MWP was installed and was not present otherwise. Have either of you noticed anything else that might seem 'odd' - for example: look at your bandwidth usage to see if you appear to be using more than you normally do.

While no comfort - I've been using PC's for business and pleasure since the early 1980's and sometimes find it's the simplest things that I did or overlooked that caused a problem. Easily sorted out the moment I asked for help from someone with a fresh set of eyes. Happens to us all.

I too suspect you have unwanted guests - but would still like to go by the numbers just in case.

In the meantime, I'd advise you both to ASSUME you have unwanted guests and not do anything like internet banking or credit card purchases until we have this sorted out. It's my cautious nature ....

Only one thing that I don't think I mentioned before. Have you checked the Account listing in your DT install of MWP 2010 and make sure that your wife's account did not get imported from elsewhere and the email is being intermixed with yours?

Hi Bebop

Are you able to advise us about your situation yet? Even if everything is fine - that info alone helps us too.

Best of luck.

The dt does not yet have this new version of mwp10 that came in this new laptop with windows 7 and mwp10 30 day trial version that endsin 3 days. My wife only has an account using this new laptop and not my desktop. Her account was in her pryor laptop that iis now broken and out of service. that account was not the new version 10 either.
INFO:
This morning I forwarded 8 email to a group that included this laptop, that was booted up and just sitting open and not hibernating. I checked the laptop and all 8 emails were therein the MWP10. I then minimized mwp and went back to the desktop and forwarded 4 more emails to this group. Now a total of 12 emails. I then came back to the LT and maximized the MWP and the 8 emails that were on it were gone and now the 4 new ones were there. I washed them and it opened the new windows live email program and dl'd the 4 new emails.
Note that the orignal 8 emails were NOT DELETED now were they washed. The MWP was just minimized to wait for the other 4 emails.
There is still the problem of no emails go to this laptop unless it is booted up and currently on. If the laptop is totally shut down or hibernating and booted, it has not received any emails. The emails are only on the server to be downloaded if the laptop is up and open. I do not have this problem with any of the other computer in the network. I have checked the router and it is still set up correctly as it has been in use for the last 4 years. I AM STUMPED AT THIS POINT THANKS FOR ANY HELP BEBOP

Let me reiterate one more time: The power on state of the Laptop has no control over the mail server.

Change the password for the account at your ISP.

I have now discovered that this new computer with the new MWP10 had a different pW then the ISP and Local network. that was resolved and now everything is working as it should.
However today MWP Trial expired but that is not a problem either. I have the older one in my desktop and may move a copy to the new laptop. thanks for advice and help,
Bebop
