I just "upgraded" to 1.0.19 of Mailwasher Pro 2010, and must confess I am not happy. It takes absolutely forever to process mail! Plus, I was used to having the preview show up without me having to ask. And now when I do ask, it takes forever. What happened to just the first 500 lines? or however many.... it seems to always want to load the entire email. I must confess i don't have much patience, having been used to prompt "washing" and deletion. After less than one day, i already went back to my old version. Thank goodness it still works! Although now I do regret I paid $10 for this upgrade. I have been a long-time fan of your software and have recommended it to others, but not his version unless some changes happen.

This may be do to an outdated video driver. Several have had issues cleared up by updating the video driver.

With the new version Blacklisting does not automatically mark the msgs for deletion unless you change some settings or add a simple filter.
dcinelli1 wrote:Additionally, even though my settings and lists were supposed to be imported, some "friends" are now blacklisted and blacklisted emails are friends
This may be due to importing from other lists stored on your system. You can either clear the lists completely and start fresh with MWP 2010 or edit the lists to eliminate the undesired entries. Friends and Blacklists are much less reliable today than they used to be. Spammers hijack Friends or legitimate addresses and the life of any single spam address is very short.

The number of lines downloaded is user managed in Settings, General, Checking Mail. If you scroll down to the bottom of the preview pane that tells MWP 2010 to download the full message.

Thanks for responding, Sidewinder. I've now gone in and made some setting changes, but it turns out I only had it set to 200 lines. I've now changed it to 50 lines to see if that makes any difference.

For what it's worth, when I check mail, it takes about 20 times longer with the new MW than it did with my old one. Right now I'm running both, so if I get too frustrated with the new one, I just check the old one. I know they are supposed to have made all kinds of improvements, but did it have to come with so many disadvantages when it comes to time?

I suggest that after you finish the next mail check that you go to Help, Send Logs. Include a brief description of the problem, refer to this post and put Chris in the Ticket box. They can take a look at what is taking that much time.

I have to agree about the speed concerns.

There are a lot of things I like about the new Mailwasher. I like the colors and the grouping. But admittedly, you need to spend some time changing the layout, building filters for things that used to be automatic (like checking trash on blacklisted emails which isn't automatically done), etc. And there are bugs that many people have pointed out (i.e. trash checks will uncheck when you do certain other functions like add someone to a blacklist).

But speed is the real disaster. I don't have the newest machine (Sony Vaio 2.8GHz, 1.5GB RAM) but MailWasher is really the only thing slogging on my machine. And oddly it seems to have made other programs slower since I installed it - might be with all the background checking and logic. This needs to get fixed quickly and makes it feel like the program was released prematurely. I've been using MailWasher for years through many upgrades and this is the first big mistake.

Because I've had such good history, I'll stick with it for awhile but I won't be upgrading my wife's computer anytime soon.

Also, I have gone through all of the performance improvements and turned them on and it barely dents performance.

Can you clarify on what aspects are bad. We need to know exactly what people are finding slow.

While I appreciate the new, improved "eye candy" of the new version, I, too am very disappointed in the loss of speed - and particularly the loss of responsiveness to keyboard shortcuts ... I'm a keyboarder, not a mouser. The old version understood my ways ... this one doesn't, and takes far too much of my time. Not asking for my money back, because I do appreciate the application, but I'd really like to have my old keyboarder friendly, much faster version back. How do I do this?!

You can always download the old version from http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/ma ... o/download

Can I ask though, exactly what keyboard shortcuts ? Do you mean moving between emails ? and if so, if you switch off the Preview Pane under View >> Preview Pane, does that make it more responsive ?

Thanks, for the suggestion. I've just turned off preview pane (which took some counter-intuitive doing, I might add), and will see if it improves performance but ...

Glad that you suggested turning off preview pane, because it was becoming a real pain when I gave focus to it using scroll bar to view text: as soon as I did, MW would decide that I needed to preview entire text of msg and took its time getting it while ignoring my mouse or keyboard expressed desire to move on to next msg !

As for keyboard shortcuts ... I use F5 for check mail, F6 (which is really, really slow and often makes mistakes!) to wash, and for navigation of inbox I use cursor arrow keys (to which MW is sometimes responsive, but most often very delayed to the point that I would consider non-responsive) and "D" for delete, + for friend (and - for non-friend!) etc.

OK good, so I don't think it's the keyboard shortcut being slow, just the actual Wash process. Next time it happens send me some logs to look at, go Help >> Send Support Logs >> enter chris as the Ticket Number >> enter a brief note about the problem (because I get a lot of logs sent I forget why I'm getting them) >> Send Logs.

I expect you may notice a better response with the Preview Pane off, that's an area we're trying to look at now as on some machines it's taking a few seconds to load the message into the Preview area which makes everything else delay.

Thanks, Chris ... but it's not just the Preview that is problematic, it's also navigation using cursor keys to move from one msg to another and using D (or even [Delete]) that is very slow (even when mousing, I might add)

But I'll try the Preview pane off for a day or so and report back!

"Top of screen where the Fetch, Wash and Email Icons can be reduced in size using a slider under Quick Display."

Thank you Sidewinder - I had been trying under Display and Settings and just thought this tab was a repeat of that!

The specific element of sluggishness that I find most bothersome is response time to a user command. If I click on the trash can next to a msg there is a lag before it checks. If I click on an email to see the preview, there is spinning animation and a "loading" msg and then a lag until the preview appears. I can handle that it takes time when the wash mail or check mail buttons are clicked as there is a lot of functionality in these, but the others should be instantaneous.

There are a few other annoying slow areas. If you go to settings and click on spam tools, by default it is on the friends list and scans your friend list. Mine is 1,800 long and it checks it everytime which takes 10-20 seconds. Seems odd. Showing the list was never a problem in prior versions. While this functionality is not used frequently, I just see it as one of many examples of functions that used to be instantaneous which now take time.

Collecting mail off a server is not rocket science and neither is getting a responsive GUI in a reasonably well programmed application. I don't know what you guys are writing but as far as I am concerned questions like "what is slow' in the new mailwasher GUI means to me the testers are either blind or the testing is done on a CRAY supercomputer running windows. Get yourself a low budget / low speed PC and try to get the new version running fast on that. You may find an improvement in customer responses and you may also be able to see the obvious. The new Mailwasher 2010 speed sucks and I feel as though I have wasted a tenner!
