How To: Spamcop.net reporting for the new MW

Mon Jun 27, 2011 3:20 am

Edit: Added a pictorial settings section to the end of this post.

I'll try to give a brief (yea, right... tl;dr :-) introduction to spamcop.net reporting here along with the settings to use in MW 2011 to send the reports. Much of this is cribbed from the spamcop.net pages, links to the originals are included.

The first thing to keep in mind when using spamcop.net... NEVER share your spamcop.net e-mail address or the unique string it contains with anyone as that will give them permission to submit to your account and make other changes that you may not like the results of.

A bit of spamcop.net history: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/109.html

First you need a spamcop.net account, a free one will do just fine and if you want you can update it to a paid account for faster processing and more features. The paid option is not necessary.

To set up your account go here: http://spamcop.net/anonsignup.shtml there are some good links and reading there some of which I'm duplicating below.

You might want to consider signing up for a new e-mail account, with your ISP or Gmail to use for your spamcop.net reporting address (also your login address for free accounts) as MW does not deal well with the reports being in your incoming mail that it looks at. The problem is that you must manually set each one so that it is not trained into the Bayesian or you'll make a mess of the learning tool in short order. I have requested an option be added to the filters so that you could set messages that come back from spamcop.net to not be trained but that isn't going to be in the next version.

How do I change my free account's spam-reporting email address? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/231.html (you can't)

For a paid account you can use any e-mail address you can check to create the account and then change the address used for reports that the reports go where you want once you are set up. http://www.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=wizard&stage=1

To upgrade to a paid account: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/288.html Note: You can save a good deal by reporting from MW compared to some other methods since it trims your reports to the spam throttle settings which greatly reduces your fuel usage on larger spam messages.

Getting started: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/125.html what to report, what not to report http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/14.html and the basic rules that spamcop.net users need to abide by. Breaking the rules? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/143.html

Privacy policy: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/168.html

How is data from spam submissions used? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/145.html

Mailhosts configuration: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/397.html This is optional for full reports but worth doing since it prevents you from reporting your ISP by accident, if you are reporting messages you have forwarded to yourself it is still optional but you really need to do it for your reports to be of full value and to prevent missing a tick mark and reporting yourself. You do the configuration from the main spamcop.net page, the Mailhosts tab.

Edit: Added paragraph.
Reporting modes (Quick or Full) The submit mode is available at signup with no further effort needed on your part. The quick mode you must complete the mailhosts configuration and request it be enabled. Once you have the basic submit that came enabled and the quick authorization in place you can submit to either as you see fit. Technically you can submit a message to both but whichever submission hits the spamcop.net parser first will cause the second to reject with an "already reported" error message.

Full reporting: This is the default and safest method of reporting, you send in the spam, spamcop sends you an e-mail letting you know it has been processed, you visit the parser page ( http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/lofiver ... t6510.html skip down to the Parser Page section) where you verify what will be done with the spam you submitted.

Edit: Added advanced user suggestion.
Quick reporting: For advanced users http://forum.spamcop.net/scwik/QuickReporting "Quick Reporting" is probably the quickest way to report spam emails to SpamCop. "Quick Reporting" is the mode of reporting in which ONLY the source of the spam email is reported to the determined spew source and the SCBL. Other things such as spam websites in the body of the spam email etc., are not reported. In fact, the body of the spam email will not be processed at all if you do "quick reporting". Quick reporting can be very DANGEROUS. If everything is set up properly, and if it works correctly; it is great. The dangers are one reason a configured mailhosts system is required to use it.

A note on mole reporting: This is a reporting option and not a mode of reporting like Submit or Quick http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/373.html a mostly useless activity and you might as well not bother given its minor impact on spammers.

How should I select the recipients for my full mode spam report? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/126.html spamcop.net will give you a list to select from on the Parser Page, this gives you a bit of guidance on how to select from that list.

Limits on reporting spam: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/350.html Don't send more than 3,000 reports in a 24 hour period. MW will eventually enforce the limits on individual reports as to number of attached spam messages and overall size, 20 spams and 50 KB http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/166.html but for now you need to do that manually. Unconfirmed posts show higher limits may be allowed but these are the official ones.

Spam too old to report: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/188.html basically 48 hours is too old, actually anything more than about 12 hours is unlikely to be of much value and stuff a few minutes to an hour old is the most valuable to report. My personal limit for spam is 12 hours, for bogus bounces, C/R messages and the like I report out to the full 48 hour limit as they are of value whenever sent.

Preferences: http://www.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=showadvanced Things you can tweak to tailor spamcop.net to your tastes.

Spam statistics: http://www.spamcop.net/spamstats.shtml

Spamcop.net offers some very good forums for discussing and learning the spamcop.net system: http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/ they also offer newsgroups, if you use usenet you'll know how to find and use them otherwise stick to the forums.

--------- Advanced Reporting Questions -----------

SpamCop said "No reports filed." What does it mean? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/11.html

Why aren't reports sent to all relay operators: http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/70.html

Why does SpamCop say email to X bounces? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/12.html

Why does SpamCop say "Sorry, X refuses to accept SpamCop reports?" http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/77.html

Why are some reports sent to internal SpamCop addresses? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/253.html

Why does SpamCop want to send a report to my own network administrator? http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/13.html

Reports not arriving, notifications not coming back? http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.p ... topic=1848

Types of reports smamcop.net sends out about a spam: http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.p ... topic=4540

Can I send my spamcop report to additional recipients? http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/126.html (Other email addresses section)

--------------

Note: Do be careful to not report messages you are sent by spamcop.net, they are not amused if you report them to them.

Note: It is a good idea to set all spamcop reports to "Unclassified" that is neither the red or green classification button selected.

Note: If you are using filters and grouping it is a good idea to create a filter for your spamcop reports to keep them all in one place and make the two above notes easier to accomplish.

Note: For spamcop.net reports the "email Content" field must be blank or your report will be rejected. This is on the bug list and will be fixed at some point.

Note: Pick any of your SMTP servers to send via, this is to allow you to avoid sending via a broken server that rejects, mangles or drops spam reports.

When I try to enable Spamcop in settings, I get the message "You must enter your unique Spamcop reporting address.".
How do I enter it and am I to enter the email address I'm using in Spamcop.net or do I use my Spamcop.net password?

SpamCop issues each user with a user unique email address that begins with "submit." That is what you put in the "Email To" setting in MWP.

I hate being obtuse, but the current value in the Spamcop "Mail to" is "submit.[uid]@spam.spamcop.net". I assume I'm supposed to insert something in "uid". The only things I've received from Spamcop are my userid and password. I have set up my home email address. Do I just insert my userid in the "uid" space?

If you log into the SpamCop web site with your id info and the go to the Report Spam tab you will find the line "Forward your spam to:" with the complete entry that you need for MWP.

After you log in to spamcop at http://www.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=loginform with your UserID and password, you'll find your unique submit..... e-mail address (the one you should submit in MWP) somewhere on the bottom of next page of the Spamcopsite.

Now that I have Spamcop reporting working, how do I set a sender for automatic delete that I don't want to report. I have a friend who has me on his subscription list for every political email he receives. I have him blacklisted for automatic delete, but I don't want him reported.

Rest assured: no message is reported automatically; you purposely need to tick the icon of the spamservice manually if you want a message reported. So, as long as you don't click any of the reporting icons, nothing will be reported!

MailWasher only reports emails you select to report, so if you had a Custom Filter that was automatically deleting the email, or he was on your Blacklist and you were automatically deleting those, then no reports for those emails will be sent. Typically spam reporting services, SpamCop especially don't want folk reporting without first making a confirmation action of some kind i.e. having to click the Report column....so it's probably unlikely you'll see automatic reporting ever being a feature in MailWasher.
