Serious issues with MWP on Win10 build 14271

Fri Feb 26, 2016 9:37 am

MWP 7.7.09 doesn't run correctly and can't be installed/repaired/uninstalled if you upgrade to insider build 14271 of Win 10.

If MWP is installed when you update to this Win10 build, it will still be present and running but it's unable to display the tray icon or check email or bring up the main window. Trying to repair or uninstall it hangs the installer at this point:

The same problem exists if you uninstall MWP prior to updating to 14271 and then try to install it. The installer hangs and there is no further progress and the only option is to reboot or kill it from Task Manager (cancelling has no effect) :cry

No. I can't uninstall or repair the existing installation so I can't install the older version you linked to. When I try to uninstall, the progress bar runs for a second then stalls at "Gathering required information..."

This issue is caused by a change deep inside the latest builds of Win10 (build 14271 and higher). Several programs are affected: ZoneAlarm Pro causes BSODs soon after the desktop appears; I have to run a patch utility every time I want to run Quicken 2016 under this build otherwise it disappears without running (like MWP), and I spent weeks working with Caelo to help them get their excellent Outlook organizer program NEO Pro finally stable on these and earlier builds. None of my dozens of other programs are affected, so I guess it's something unique to these :?

All 4 programs ran perfectly prior build 14271, and all but Zone Alarm Pro will run with this build if I do a full OS reset and wipe out all the installed programs and start fresh. That's a real pain and is something I did on one machine, but it would be great if we could at least understand what's going on to see if it's an issue that Firetrust might want to address. Please let me know if there are any logs or diagnostics that might help.

Well, here's an interesting development! After the uninstall attempt froze, I rebooted my machine and went to lunch. When I signed in just now, v7.7.9 was running and was showing the import email account screen

I went through the wizard then registered it, and somehow it's all working now. Whatever is going on seems very similar to the problem I'm having with Quicken, where it won't run on its own but somehow updating it with the patching app gets it running, just like the aborted attempt to uninstall MWP did.

At this point I can't say where the problem lies or whether another Win10 build update might break my MWP installation again, but at least I'll know to try to uninstall it and then reboot to see if that gets things sorted out.

One of the worst features of win8/10 is fast startup. If the machine hasn't restarted (as opposed to shutting down) in a few weeks or a month, fast startup saves everything (including memory leaks) and will record up time (in task manager/performance) as the time since the last restart (it doesn't count shut downs). It might help to regularly reboot or just disable the offending feature (it is in 'power options' under the items in the left column). Maybe that will help?
