No way to specify email client after MS Office 2016 upgrade

Mon Jan 15, 2018 5:52 am

I just upgraded my MS Office suite from the 2010 version to the 2016 version. I then uninstalled the 2010 version to prevent any possible collisions between app. versions. Unfortunately, deleting the 2010 version removed the association between MailWasher Pro v 7.11.0 and an email client, leaving only the generic "Mail Program" icon in the main display.

I've looked in vain in the MWP configuration settings screens for a way to specify Outlook 2016 as my new mail client. Below/attached, for example, is the screenshot of the General Settings screen.

I've searched the user forums for troubleshooting suggestions, but the most recent suggestion with a screen shot is from 2010, which is unhelpful for my situation.

Do I have to re-install MailWasher Pro to specify the email client again? If so, this seems like a design limitation to address in a future release.

Hi Digerati,

Well, that was an odd experience. The email client was already specified as Outlook 2016, the "Launch after Wash Mail" toggle was enabled, and the "Use default email program icon" toggle was unchecked. But still MWP displayed the generic email program icon, didn't launch the mail client after washing mail, and wouldn't launch Outlook 2016 when I clicked the generic email program icon.

On a hunch, I unchecked the the "Launch after Wash Mail" toggle, then switched back to the MWP inbox. Voila! There was the Outlook 2016 application icon. Clicking the icon launched Outlook 2016, as expected.

Should this have been considered atypical/buggy behavior by MWP?

MailWasher grabs the icon to display from the EXE, which in the upgrade process to 2016 would have changed location. So it probably just needed a kick, and unchecking made MailWasher recheck for icons and locations etc..

I guess we'll have to wait and see if more people report the same problem. I didn't when I upgraded from Office/Outlook 2007 to 2016.

As RD noted, Office 2016 installs in a different folder from previous versions. I note also, the new version has the same file name (outlook.exe) so maybe MW didn't realize there was any change, as suggested. But again, it worked fine for me so who knows. I am just glad it works right for you now.
