Are you sure you are using the right password ?
No, I'm not.

I have used my normal, well established, password for Gmail. That doesn't work.

I replaced it with one given to me by Google to see what would happen if I followed the "app" password route. That doesn't work either.

Google seems to have completely buggered things up.

Is changing the password an option ?

I would disable 2 Factor Auth first, and set Less Secure Apps is set to ON. Then I would remove the account from MailWasher, and changing the GMail password and adding the account back in.

Ok, I have done all that, and Mailwasher still fails to connect to the server. I've tried POP3 and IMAP with no luck. What settings do you suggest?

This is so bizarre.
If you go here, are POP and IMAP enabled ?

I prefer IMAP over POP personally, loading only my unread messages.

I've disable the 2 step authorisation, and re-enable less secure applications. I changed my GMail password, removed the account from MailWasher, as you suggested, and then added the account again.

I used POP3 - just habit. I did try IMAP a couple of times but it never seemed to work for me.

That has sorted things out.

By the way, what are the pros and cons of IMAP?

Thank you for your patience.

If I recall, you don't use an email program, instead using the browser so IMAP and POP with GMail are not too different for you.

I use IMAP in MailWasher and have it loading unread messages, this is just my personal preference of how I use MailWasher. I do this with all my accounts.

With POP there is no Read/Unread distinction, but if you're deleting/moving messages about in GMail itself, the Inbox too would be quite clean from MailWashers point of view.

Is there any way of doing this without disabling the 2-step authorisation?
I am happy to have the extra protection but frustrated that I cannot now use Mailwasher for Gmail. It is fine for my other accounts of course.

Try an app specific password, https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Thanks but I already tried that. I still get a message in Mailwasher saying that Gmail requires my authorisation when I try to use the generated password.

Keeping the app specific password, is OAUTH enabled under Settings >> Accounts >> Incoming >> Advanced ?

Also check Less Secure Apps is set to ON here https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps?pli=1
The account will still use SSL when connecting, which in my view is sufficient for this purpose.

Yes OAUTH is enabled.
And no, I can't set Less Secure Apps to ON as Google doesn't allow me to make the change.

Oh right, my mistake.

So with your app specific password you created put into MailWasher and turning off OAUTH in MailWasher, does it still not work ?
Also worth noting, when I create an app specific password, the display makes it appear like the password had spaces, which you do not enter.

Ahh. My misunderstanding. I thought you meant that I should have OAUTH on. I have turned OAUTH off and it now seems to be ok.
Thank you for the promptness of your help.
