How can I stop the listing of emails by accounts? My old version just listed them as they arrived without any notice of account and today, yesterday & etc.

Did you click on the "Received" column header? You can sort by the received timestamp, with most recent first, or oldest first. Once you have it the way you want, that setting should stick.

It sounds like you have grouping enabled. If you right click on the Receiving column heading, uncheck the option Group By Received.
If you have your emails also grouped by Account, then do the same above on the account column heading
