Using VPN, mailwasher keeps throwing errors, however I can access the gmail account simply by bypassing mailwasher and opening email client (Thunderbird) directly? Is there a way to get mailwasher/gmail combo to work through VPN?

You might need to enable 2 Step Verification if you haven't already https://myaccount.google.com/security?gar=1

ThunderBird I expect will be using OAUTH which is considered more secure and I guess why it's going through.
