A month or so ago, I was notified by AOL that they didn't like me using a 3rd party email program (I use Thunderbird on my computers for AOL and Gmail), (my husband uses Windows Live Mail for AOL). In order to continue using the email programs that we have on our computers, they said they needed to do some kind of change with passwords. They did that on both computers and Mailwasher Pro7 worked just fine for us after that.

Now it isn't working as it creates errors and I don't know how to fix that.

I think we are going to have to discontinue using Mailwasher Pro 7. I have felt safe using it as it helps with spam, etc.

I was told by family to just go online and read our mail. I create folders for different types of emails in Thunderbird so it is so easy to use more than one email address. I would have to go into AOL online (which, by the way has ads - yuck) and go online to Gmail.

Anyway, is there any suggestions from this forum that might help?

Oh, this is Bulldogs Sweety again. I forgot to add that we are in our 80's and not up to a lot of technology. Also, I am not sure if I will get notification on my email on getting an answer. Again, thanks

For AOL, you need to create an App Password, which is the one you then enter into MailWasher

Your main AOL password stays the same as it is now, this app password is just to use in MailWasher.


Once we add the OAUTH system for AOL accounts into MailWasher, you can go back to using your regular AOL password, but until then, the App Password will be needed,

Ok. When AOL took over they were in Thunderbird and my husband's computer when changing password. You are saying to do this right in AOL. Well, do I just create any password just for this?

When you create an App Password, you won't get any say in what the password is, it is generated randomly.

ThunderBird does support the OAUTH system, so your regular AOL password most likely just works fine there. This App Password is just a special password to use in MailWasher only.

Thank you. I think I mentioned earlier, that I wasn't too computer literate, so giving me the complete process is helpful. If I remember correctly, when the AOL people were in my computer, they went into Thunderbird and pasted the app in there. Probably where they found the regular password. So, to finish this, I guess I should paste this app into where the passwords for my two email addresses.

You know, at first when AOL started this, I was tempted to just quit AOL. I didn't choose AOL, but when Verizon dropped us for Cable, we were sent to AOL with our email addresses. I have my email address as my main email address, I used it for everything except my business, and I created the gmail address for my students and for my business online. Someone told me I could just get another gmail account and it would be valid for everything, so maybe in the future I will do just that and close out my verizon and my husband's verizon email address.
