Currently the colors appear as follows:
White = items with no status
Red = items with "spam" status
Green = items with either "good" or "friend" status
I would like to be able to differentiate between the "good" or "friend" status by assigning different colors.
Is this possible?

Re: Assign colors based on Status
Not in a nice easy way.
What you can do is create a Custom Filter (Settings >> Spam Tools >> Filters) and beside Add Rule click the drop down and select Spam Tool Rule >> create the filter to mark emails that match your Friends List. Then you can assign the filter a custom colour.
It will only show that colour in the Status field however.

Re: Assign colors based on Status
If you are REALLY adventurous, you can create a filter for all your legitimate email senders, then assign a separate color for every filter you create. However, this involves editing the filters.xml file and entering the hex value of the color you want, as found in this color palette chart:
It is definitely an involved process. But once setup, it can really make the message grid more readable and easier to organize.
