Using mailwasher with Gmail and Outlook - How to get Outlook to delete emails from GMail...?

ok, so I've finally gotten around to configuring my gmail account with Mailwasher (7) and Outlook (365).

So mailwasher works ok - I can view my gmail emails in mailwasher and mailwasher can delete the spam from my gmail account. so far so good.

The problem is with outlook. I can set gmail up (with POP) in outlook, and it downloads the email ok - but it doesn't delete it from the server (despite unchecking the "Leave a copy of the message on the server" option in outlook).

After a bit of googling around it seems there are some settings within gmail itself (Settings > see all settings > forwarding and pop/imap > pop download > When messages are accessed with POP). It has the following options:
  • Keep gmail's copy in the inbox
  • Mark gmail's copy as read
  • Archive gmail's copy
  • Delete gmail's copy
I'm assuming these options are overriding outlooks attempts to delete the emails from the gmail server...?

It would look like the one I want is "Delete gmail's copy", however, my reading of that would be that mailwasher would "access it with pop" first, and then the files would be deleted, and then when outlook looked at the server there'd be no emails left!

So does anyone know if it is possible to configure gmail/outlook so that:

  • Mailwasher accesses the gmail account and only washes the spam
  • Outlook downloads the emails, then the emails are deleted from gmail

Yes, "Delete gmail's copy" is the one you want, this will only delete mail if a POP account deletes it, MW accessing it wont cause any deletions unless you mark for delete then click Wash, OR setup MW to auto delete.

Note that is only what I have experienced, I'd do a couple of tests first as gmail servers can be funny things....
