How do I assign a certain sound to new mail that arrives?

Currently there isn't a good way, allowing you to pick a wav file is still to be done inside MW.

What you can do is find the Windows sound (notify.wav) on my XP box and rename it (notify.wav-original) and copy in a wav sound file that you prefer and rename it to the original sound's name.

Yeap, right now that's the only alternative, though any other program that used the same sound file would also play whatever file you put in place.

I think the file you want is C:\Windows\media\notify.wav

That's what it is on my Windows7 machine, not sure if it uses the same for XP

Confirm the location is same on my XP.

Since the forum is allergic to wav files and won't allow an extension of "remove-this" I give you a file with a txt extension. If you remove all after the .wav from the name it will happily play on your systrem.
mailcall.wav.remove-this.txt
Bugle - mail call, for all you ex-service folks.
Rename notify.wav for MW to use.

You should also be able to go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices,Sounds Tab and scroll down to New Mail Notification and you can change the file to one of your choosing.

Does MW use that to pick the sound it uses?

I'm pretty sure rusticdog has said MW doesn't so I didn't try using that method. Did you see his post back up a few?

That's what got me thinking about where to change it in Windows. Maybe they use the discrete file name and path without using the Windows logic, but that is the sound that I am getting on my DT(XP)

So try switching from the control panel and see if it actually works. If it doesn't try my and rusticdog's method and see if it does work.

I think you'll find that sound is from the old MailWasher Pro, otherwise you could easily change it. The new MailWasher is hardcoded to use that location specified

Don't suppose once things slow down a little that we couldn't get a mod for audio so that the User could designate their own location and sound file??? Or is that already on the list??? :scratch :scratch

Very much so, I would imagine it would be one of the first things we add in....once things die down of course.

I think there are a half dozen sound suggestions out there, some for more than one sound based on the type of incoming mail for that mail check.

More would be nice but any noise is good for now so they could get the new version out the door.
