In previous versions of MW, the friends list had priority over filters unless otherwise specified, but in the new version, filters seem to trump the friends list no matter what. How do I set filters so that they won't apply to mail from someone on my friends list?

Two steps, first add a spam rule:
Then add the friends list:
You'll need to select All Rules instead of Any for the Apply setting too.

There is a filter rule "Sender is not on my Friends List" which you could add.
When you go to Add Rule, click the small drop down arrow and select the option "Spam Tool rule", you'll see it there.

I hate it when that happens... :-)
But then when you finally drag in to work at 10 in the morning what can you expect!

I see no menu entry for rules.
Nothing in settings.
It was only when I did a search on the help file that I found it.
Buried in "Filters".
I know I am slow, but others may be equally challenged.
It might need flagging up a bit more prominently. Or explaining more clearly in messages here.
