I have WIN-XP/SP3 and have been using MailwasherPro5.something for many years, connecting with Thunderbird with never a problem. I have started tidying up my various email sources and now they all forward to Fastmaill from where I propose to download to the email client in Opera. I tried to use old Mailwasher to preview Fastmail and cull the garbage but couldn't get it to connect either with IMAP or POP - error was username or password fail.
I downloaded MailwasherPro2010 trial last night expecting that might give me a better result. That fails for apparently the same reasons. In all cases I have entered and re-entered usernames and passwords (paying attention to all Fastmail instructions I can find) but can't get any preview connection. Using the same username/password combo I have no problem connecting with Fastmail directly, outside Mailwasher.
Can anyone suggest a fix?

Re: Connecting to Fastmail via IMAP
If your password has any special characters, like $ or #, then that will be the cause for MW2010 not working.
Otherwise it should work...here's my settings which are working for me

Re: Connecting to Fastmail via IMAP
There is a small bug in 2010 were a password with special characters might cause a mail fetch to fail.
Try changing your password but only use letters & numbers, see if that fixes the problem.
*Edit* RD beat me too it

Another possibility is that the Fastmail account is locked. John1947, if in MailWasher2010, go Help >> User Files >> Logs >> open todays date folder >> look for MWPapp_<accountname>.log where <accountname> is the name you gave the account, in there you might see more information why it's not logging in. Feel free to email me the details to forum@firetrust.com or post here if you can't tell what's going on.

Hello again Rusticdog & Chris Gleason.
Thanks for suggestions so far. Nothing you've suggested has met with success.
Here's the latest MWP10 log entry which shows a change in the failure activity recorded.
(I checked my login log at Fastmail but it said there that the reason for the failure was "unavailable").

Well spotted Rusticdog.
I unchecked the appropriate box (can't say whether I was responsible for checking it in the first place -- probably was!).
Now MWP10 connects and downloads from Fastmail.
Many thanks for the detective work and thanks to all others who contributed to the help effort. I'm impressed by the level of support.
'Bye for now.

Re: Connecting to Fastmail via IMAP
In the past whining about your level name has resulted in getting it changed for some folks. That can be good "Not a Sheep" or not so good "Major PITA" depending on the beer level in NZ. :-)
