Why does MW display archived and sent messages in GMAIL?

Sat Jul 24, 2010 10:41 pm

Hello, I am new to this forum and new to MW, so forgive me if I say anything dumb!

I've set up MailWasher 2010 to display my gmail messages. Everything seems to work fine aside from that MW displays ALL messages reveived since I set it up (it doesn't display the thousands of older messages). What can I do to make it only display messages that are in my Inbox, ie messages that I haven't archived?

Pretty soon it will become unusuable as it will list hundreds of messages...

**Weirdly, it even lists messages in my Sent folder, ie messages that I myself have sent to other people.**

I hope someone can help. I'll register the product if someone can solve this problem.

I've done a search on this forum and couldn't find anything about this.

Welcome :)

I assume you're using POP3 to access the Gmail account ?

I think in the Gmail settings (when logged into website) you have options over which emails to show, so maybe that's set to ALL email. I think it should be set to 'Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on'

Yes. Is that correct?

Welcome :)
I've already got that option chosen: only display mail that arrives from now on. It does do that, ie it doesn't display the thousands of old messages! But the problem is that it displays ALL messages dated since I set up MW, whether or not they're marked as read/unread or whether or not they're archived, and it even lists messages that I myself have sent!

I can't be the first person to encounter this problem?

Maybe there is an option in MW that I have to choose, that only lists UNREAD messages or something? But I can't find one.

You send messages mostly through the GMail website ? I think when you send through this it puts a copy in your Inbox. If you change MailWasher to use IMAP instead of POP, is that any better ?

I find it much easier to handle Gmail in IMAP mode, you can have both POP & IMAP enabled at the same time :)

Why not try IMAP for mailwasher and leave your email client accessing via POP.

Thanks, both! I'll have a go at setting up MW with IMAP.

Just change the account type under the Incoming tab. MailWasher should do the rest and alter settings accordingly.

Does the new version of Mailwasher move the deleted emails to the GMail deleted or trash folder or does it just mark them as archived?

The archived option is useless in my opinion because there is no way I know to list just the archived messages in Gmail I know you can list All Messages but that doesn't help me when I want to delete just the archived items.

Hoping the 2010 MW has been updated to change how deletes are handled.

Not yet, as we just implemented standard IMAP. It is on the list though to alter this behaviour.

Since by default, Gmail hides the 'Spam' folder, Gmail Users (IMAP) may like to mark the 'Spam' folder as per the following illustration:-

ps:-
This does not apply to Gmail Users on POP3 configurations.
MailWasher Pro (βeta) | Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC (22H2) | The Bat! Professional (βeta) | Windows 10 Firewall Control (βeta) | ESET Endpoint Antivirus (βeta) | nVIDIA GeForce (GTX 1060) | WebView2 Runtime (118.0.2088.61) | .NET Framework (4.8.1)

Re: Why does MW display archived and sent messages in GMAIL?

Mon Aug 02, 2010 12:15 am

I'm getting a bit confused now.

Personally, I want the emails to be completed deleted from the server, not moved to bin or spam. Someone is stalking me and just knowing that they're still sending me ten messages a day is what is distressing. Whether they are archived or not, whether they are in the spam folder or not, and whether or not they are in the bin, makes little difference: I still see the messages and feel creeped out. I mean, I have to check the spam folder and the bin in case anything important is in there, so I'm still going to see the stalker messages!

And she knows that I don't OPEN the messages so she says what she wants to say in the message subject, so I can't even deal with this problem by simply not opening the messages.

Is it not possible for MW to actually bounce the messages so that they're not in my gmail account at all? Not even archived, in spam or in the bin?

Aside from whether or not the messages actually get deleted at the server or just marked as spam or whatever, if I use the bounce option will she receive a MESSAGE UNDELIEVERED or whatever message? I was hoping I could use MW to convince her that my email address no longer exists.

Thanks for any help!

This is exactly what manual bounce is for :)

Gmail does not follow proper IMAP standards so deleting from the Inbox does not work as one would think :( The mail is left in "All mail" :( To overcome this if deleted mail was move to another folder (and not put in the recycle bin) and you have this other folder selected in the IMAP folder list then the next fetch will properly delete the emails.

It's a pity Gmail needs the above bodge but the above would be useful to all IMAP accounts anyway.

Until my suggestion is implemented, you will need to manually delete unwanted stuff from "All mail" :thumbsdown :rant
