Bounce option in the new version

Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:05 pm

Is there a "bounce" option in the new version like the the one on the previous version of MW?

Yes it's there, but designed to be used much less. In the Preview Pane area you'll see the bounce action, for further light reading check out http://forum.firetrust.com/viewtopic.ph ... 643#p32711

Yes, you have to do it per individual email, search the forum for an explanation to why bouncing is not now a good idea to unknown addresses. http://forum.firetrust.com/search.php?s ... d%5B%5D=50

@rusticdog
Maybe a sticky post is needed as this question is coming up quite often.

In the inbox, right click an email, bounce is in the menu. Also there is a link (top-right) in the preview pane/window.

If you have the preview at the bottom it looks like this screenshot.

Just make sure that you only bounce messages you are sure the spammer hasn't forged the return address on, if you bounce a forgery you are helping the spammer.

Mine doesn't have it there. It's on the "email" tab on the top.

I too find the inability to have the 'bounce' option available on the main tool bar a problem. The new arrangement is inconvenient and, in my opinion, a retrograde step.

Now I'm off to try to find out how to import all my filters into the new system. Right now I'm wondering why I'm paying for a system that gives me more problems than the old and doesn't, for me, work as well but then none of us like change so perhaps with a little application my opinion may be improved!

How many messages do you get a week that can be safely bounced?

Out of several hundred spam messages I get I find less than a dozen that are possibly safe at first look and upon closer examination maybe one or two that might be safely bounced.

With the use of filters I can keep my daily overall visible emails to below 20. Within these there would be about 25% that could be legitimately bounced. I believe the technique worked merely because most did not re-appear.

That is a very high percentage of bouncable messages, how are you determining that they are bouncable?

I find reading the headers and checking the IP addresses against the e-mail address is quite tedious, it takes me a minute or so per message by hand and about as long but much less manual effort using spamcop.net's header parser.

Much the same as you; by checking the headers. I take some pernicious delight in returning rubbish to the originators if I can manage it even if it does take a little effort. The advantages of being retired I guess!
