Two instances of MailWasher Pro

Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:48 am

I didn't mind spending $10. to upgrade to a substantial new version but I was surprised to learn the $10.
charge will be reoccuring each year
- or - will it become a larger amount next year?

I now have two instances of MailWasher Pro 6.54 and 10 ... is it safe to uninstall 6.54?

There was mention of First Alert that the $10. covers First Alert. I've never used it before ... is it part of MailWasher Pro 10 ... or do I need to download it?

Thanks

You can uninstall version 6 or leave it installed, both versions run happily on the same computer. I'd say just leave it installed in case you need to use it for something that 2010 isn't doing right for you, after a month or so and all is well then uninstall it if you need the disk space back.

Firstalert is part of both v6 and 2010, you just go to the spam tools in either version and click the enable box.

The $10 covers the firstalert tool, and ongoing maintenance and added features in 2010. The e-mail announcements (as of 8:00 Arizona time today) are still not making users aware of the annual fee up front, not a good thing!

Many thanks for the information.

I agree ... not a good thing to leave the annual update fee hidden.

I'll read up on FirstAlert ... do you use it?

Using first alert... Well I used to use it in v6 for beta-testing but it was getting too many false positives for me to feel comfortable with it. The firetrust folks did a complete re-work of the under-the-hood bits of FA and pretty much ended the false positives a while back and I started using it for real e-mail in v6.

In 2010 FA is a really handy addition to the other spam tools, it runs very quickly and isn't much of an impact even if you are checking 5,000 messages at once. So far in the last 10,000 or so messages I've gotten there hasn't been a single false positive and it is hitting on about 50% of my spam making the evaluation along with other tools weightings even more accurate.

A lot of folks are seeing even higher hit rates, mine are so low because I check every 5 minutes and often get a spam before it has been collected and added to the FA system. If I slow checks to a longer interval my hit rate goes up and on the first check of the morning it is pretty impressive.

I'd rate FA more effective even at the five minute check interval than the four DNSBLs I check and it looks to be less load on the system too.

For smaller volumes of mail neither FA or the DNSBL checks take long enough to be noticed.

Valuable information from an experienced user and I thank you.

I'm getting some duplicate messages with MW10 ... any other reports of that that you know of? Seems my email accounts were imported twice. I deleted the duplicates but still get the odd duplicate message.

If you are still seeing the duplicates after deleting all the duplicate accounts you might try exiting and restarting MW.

Make sure of the duplicate deletion as sometimes the MW account name is misleading, look at the server name and login info to be sure.

Once the duplicate accounts are gone and you've restarted you should be in good shape, I'm not seeing issues with around 40 accounts (mostly testing) set up here.
