Confused over upgrade to 2010

I am currently using Mailwasher Pro 6.5.3 on a Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) PC and have downloaded the file ready to upgrade to MailwasherPro 2010, although I have tried to find the answers here I am still rather confused about what to do :scratch

Do I uninstall 6.5.3 before installing 2010? I am not sure about creating new directories so would want to perform the default installation. So if I uninstall 6.5.3 first will 2010 still be able to import the Account settings etc?

I understand that my Email Account settings will be transferred over and hopefully the Friends list too, but the Filters need to be re-written.

Is it possible to copy the various entries from the present file C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\MailwasherPro\Filters.txt and paste them into the new location used by 2010?

Please explain in simple terms as I am a bit of a technical numpty

Hi Gniblett - love the avatar - way cool :)

"Numpty"? I love that - hope you don't mind if I pinch it from time to time but if I understand it correctly, that describes me to a "T" on my best days

Your question is not in the least silly - and it's one I asked (of myself) when I first clapped my sweaty hands on the upgrade. We've probably become conditioned to remove old versions before installing new ones plus there are valid fears / concerns about losing lots of precious filters and so forth.

If you go back to the main forum list, I'm almost certain there are general tips / instructions about installation of MWP2010 and stuff about new features - the latter is somewhat of a moving target though. As with all new programs (and MWP2010) has been written from the ground up (.Net based if that means anything to you or others), it's a 'new' program. There are cosmetic differences but most of the really important 'stuff' is under the hood - not normally visible to the average (non-techno) person. BTW- I'm sort of OK with this sort of thing but am a total village idiot with stuff like mobile phones or programmable PVR's (personal video recorders) etc. I have a medical certificate and all to prove it too.

Because of the differences in how the two products / versions were created (coded), and some clever thinking by Firetrust, you can safely install MWP2010 and it will work happily - and so too will your existing version of MWP. Despite best efforts of beta testers and coders, you can never be completely sure that a new version of anything works perfectly well on every PC because each has environments (device drivers, programs, operating systems etc) that are fairly unique for each system. Once a new version of any product is released and used across a large number of systems, then that's when 'new' (previously unknown) problems / bugs / hassles - appear. Some are cosmetic and annoying and some are show stoppers. We need and value all reports of such things (including specific details about systems and situations) so that the coders can deal with them. I *think* they use a prioritization approach - really serious problems get priority attention and so on.

There are differences in how the two product versions work. The latest one is based on lessons learned over the years. Spammers / scammers evolve their methods too - and some are quite sophisticated. MWP2010 as designed, is 'better' (easier) at dealing with the evolving nature of the spammers methods and emails. I'm not sure how else to explain this without getting into more techno-geek speak.

Based upon my own experience, the install process was painless and quite easy. I *think* it may not import existing filters - might be wrong (that somewhere here on a FAQ) - but there are instructions about how to do this yourself. I don't use filters so can't speak to this myself. My blacklist was OK though.

I use WIN 7 Pro 64 version on a reasonable but now 'old' system - 4 gig RAM with lots of stuff that load at start-up. Some people have reported comparatively slower speeds in load times and process times but that has not been my experience. The team are working hard to improve load and process speeds - and it helps to get feedback to gauge our progress.

It's almost 2 am my time so if I remember to do so, I'll add links to the forum FAQs I mentioned - but they are pretty easy to find (up near the top of the MWP2010) main forum page.

I'm running both versions simultaneously (deliberately) but would not recommend others do this. Firstly, if MWP2010 is working fine then you don't need the hassle of having the earlier version doing the same things (can cause minor problems - easily resolved). Secondly, all you need do is change the earlier version setting to stop it loading at start-up. It's still there - and easy to start manually - but not using resources unnecessarily. Part of the role of a beta tester is to deliberately try to 'break' a program - create situations that might lead to failure or expose bugs. Most people don't do this - nor would I recommend non-techs to try.

MWP2010 (latest version) on my system runs as smooth as silk - and I would not go back to the older version if I was paid to do so. Others have reported different experiences and 'turned off' the updated version, preferring instead to use the older one. All I can suggest is that you follow the install instructions, (it's quite simple), and when you feel ready, turn off the auto-start function of the earlier version. Then monitor how the program works on your system. Please report any problems / issues / concerns to the forum - and you are sure to receive help quickly.

Please be patient and help us to help make the new version better - which is probably a never ending task when you think about it. Good luck - hope it all goes well for you :thumbsup

Phew  appreciate your trouble in sending the lengthy reply Mike and by all means "pinch" the Numpty.

And to emphasise the Numptiness I assume it is OK to go ahead and install 2010 without having to create any new directories or complicated stuff like that, I can just install and then manually run 2010 or 6.5.3 if I have problems with the new version? I manually launch 6.5.3 as it is.

Then, when I am happy all is well I can uninstall 6.5.3 without doing any damage to 2010?

The Filters are another question and I do need help there, leading by the nose almost. Reading the Forum posts there is talk of changed formats and things that to be honest I just do not understand. Years ago I downloaded Gary's filters for Mailwasher and have added a few of my own so have a fair few and hope that all that I need to do is copy and paste them, as they are written in Regular Expressions, into a new location. Is this so or is a new code needed? I did say I was a Numpty

Just use the default location and it will not clash with v6 :)

Yep, uninstalling either will not affect the other :)

There is a filter conversion written by a user but its not 100% yet (http://forum.firetrust.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=7009). The Regex used by 2010 is slightly different to that in v6 so you may need to amend code.

Appreciate that, will pluck up courage when I'm a bit more alert than I am now!

Filters ..... oh dear, I was afraid of that. Hope that there is a foolproof way of doing it.

I opened v6 and 2010 side by side and used copy-paste to move the filters across, a bit slow but it worked. Only had a couple that needed a bit of tweaking to get them working in 2010.

Thanks for that Stan, will give it a go when I take the plunge next week........... have had a glass or two of bubbly so don't think it would be a good idea to do anything which taxes the grey cells today.

I assume it is quite easy to copy the friends list over in a similar way hopefully without the need of tweaking. Must admit its the tweaking bit that is getting me anxious ...

The friends and black lists should be a "click to import" deal, go to the 2010 settings and below the box you'll find an import button.

Friends should import automatically, the Blacklist is an optional import when the startup Wizard runs

Phew .... great relief here as that method worked for me, or at least I hope it has as there were no error messages displayed when I saved each entry.

Glad to hear it worked for you.
