Mail checking, how to stop automatic??

A cursory search for this didn't show my problem, I think....

I have unclicked the 'periodically check' option but it still works and pops up a balloon..... Is this a known bug??

Thanks, Barry

I haven't run into that, I toggle auto checking off from time to time and it seems to work. Are you clicking the save button once you have changed the tick mark?

Hi Barrym

Just so we are clear - periodical checks are off but MWP2010 still performs a periodical check as evidenced by the balloon thinggy?

If so - how often does this happen? Every 10 mins, each hour ... during the start of another application ... only at boot-up?

I've turned my settings off completely and can't replicate the problem - doesn't mean it isn't happening BTW. Just that it's not happening on my system. And I can't recall seeing any other post mentioning this issue either.

And you have turned off check on start up too? If not, then I would imagine the program will (properly) perform at least one check at start up.

Your settings should look like this:

BTW - I'm only referring to check mail settings and not the "Spam Throttle" or "Check Throttle" settings. Yours might differ to suit your personal tastes.

Sorry - not much help. If it continues you might need to send your logs to support.

EDIT:

Stan - excellent point about the save button. Actually, I think the save process could be improved - just have one save button to save all changes as opposed to multiple ones. Cleaner - easier from a user's perspective. More intuitive.

There was a bug where the exclusion time was being ignored by MailWasher if it was set to check on startup, and if MailWasher was started during the exclusion time....that was fixed though quite some time ago....

It's the only one I'm aware of.

After you've noticed the issue send me the log files, go Help >> Send Support Logs >> enter chris as the Ticket Number >> Send Logs...

I did check the 'save' - the box is unchecked when I go back to the settings....

I have the check at startup active.

I've checked and unchecked the box and then saved. Let's see if that works.

Bye, Barry

Hi Barry

There's no 'fingers crossed' icon for you, but mine are crossed anyway.

Thanks HEAPS for getting back to us about this. Sometimes people don't and it keeps me up all night worrying if it was my answer, bad breath or generally crappy personality that kept them away :D (just kidding)

Based on what you've told us, there should be at least one check on start-up so if you see the balloon thinggy then and only then, that's cool. It's working as designed.

I admit I am really curious to see how this pans out. Sometimes when a program doesn't play fair despite doing everything by the manual, I admit defeat, undelete all traces of the program and re-install but in a slightly different folder (eg:mailwasher2 or something close to that). I've not had to do this since using WIN 7 (that OS is just so good it's hard to believe it's from MS) but happened from time to time in XP and frequently in VISTA.

Odd as it sounds, this worked more often than not. I suspect it was something to do with a flawed registry entry - and it was on the few occasions that I bothered to look. Yeah, I know, it makes no sense - just saying it worked for me.

Over time, registries get full of garbage - bits and pieces of stuff that might have been left overs of poorly designed uninstall programs. You might notice things like OS load times creep up gradually or the system gets a bit flaky etc. Some wise owl suggested I get Ghost, do a complete reinstall of the OS and all significant applications (Firefox, Office, etc) and then save an image of this clean install. I set custom paths for stuff like Outlook and documents etc ... so that they are always 'safe'. Then, from time to time restore things to that pristine state. Sounds like a lot of effort - and is initially - but the funnest part is that my system runs as fast as you know what through a goose. Nothing beats a clean OS install in terms of max performance gain with minimal cost / effort.

Fingers still crossed ...

Hi again,

It seems to be working OK now. I did as I said, checked/unchecked and saved. As it happens I downloaded and installed the latest update next day and noticed the auto check box remained unchecked when the new version loaded, so I left things as they were and it has stopped the periodic check. Thanks to all.

Working fine, I especially like the new way it displays the 'doubtfuls' at the end of the list of incoming mails.

Bye, Barry
