Really Really slow

Thu Aug 26, 2010 6:22 pm

Just installed and started using the new Mailwasher Pro and although it seems to work it is really slow. When I click on an email to take an action like mark it as Blacklisted, it may take up to a minute for it to do it. Also when I go to wash some emails which may be about 10 of them, it will take a minute or more and sometimes it will only wash 4 or 5 of them and leave the rest and I have to wash them again. I've been using Mailwasher for a few years and the older versions are super fast compared to this new version and if there's not a fix for this, I'll probably go back to the old version because I get about 200 emails a day and I can't spend and hour or more doing what use to take about 10 seconds.

Can you give an idea of your machine. Also you can go Help >> Send Support Logs >> enter chris as your Ticket Number >> Send Logs >> I can take a look at those for anything that might be obvious.

On my machine (OSVersion: Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600>> Service Pack 3>> CPUcount: 4>> AvailableRAM: 1237) the only slow thing about this new version is startup. Where the old version would be up and running within five seconds, 2010 takes 17 seconds. After that it is really fast; my guess is, that this version needs to read a larger database upon startup.

Works really exellent; after finetuning by adding a few custom filters spam recognition is almost 100% yesterday alone 85 spams were automaticly killed and not one single mistake! :D

Startup time is mostly due to the initialisation of the User Interface, some loading of libraries....we'll be looking at startup again soon though to make sure that's as quick as possible.

Hi all,

Thanks heaps for the feedback. We rely on all feedback (positive / negative) to make MWP2010 better. It really helps when you give info about your system (CPU, RAM, operating system, AV [antivirus programs], and anything that might be running in the background). This info helps us to more accurately help you.

ALERT: GEEK- SPEAK

MWP2010 is really a new program - designed and coded from the ground up. It's based on .Net (dot net) code in case that might mean anything to anyone. .Net is a coding technology introduced by Microsoft a few years ago. Without going too far into geek-speak, Microsoft's sheer market size has significant influence over program development and programming standards. .Net has some impressive benefits - high on the list, IMHO, is enforcement of programming standards. It's not a single language - but rather a technology. .Net does have critics which is pretty commonplace in the IT (information technology) community. Concerns about performance (speed of loading in particular) was common initially and MS have done much to improve this - still, as with all technologies it is a work in progress.

Without completely boring you to tears, .Net is the future - at least until something better / faster comes along to replace it.

New operating systems like WIN 7 were designed to take advantage of .Net code - as in, those programs work 'faster' compared to the same program on WIN XP.
On the other hand, the old versions of MWP were written in a different programming language and has a different design. MWP2010 is by far a superior program to the earlier version. Despite cosmetic similarities, they are two different programs. Generally speaking, on a system with XP, programs written in C (a programming language) will always run faster (at least on start up) than one written in C# (pronounced C sharp - which is one of the .Net programming languages).

The enemy (scammers / spammers) have very deep pockets and continually adapt and change their methods to get past security software (like AV - antivirus programs and anti-spam programs etc). They make billions from very low success rates (0.01%). The good guys (all IT security development companies - Symantec, Firetrust and so on) must continually monitor what the bad guys do, develop counter measures and keep us all safe. It's a continual dance - one side develops a new innovation and the other tries to defeat it. It's not uncommon for bad guys to steal millions off a single victim - and sadly, there are many victims worldwide. It's a multi-billion dollar criminal activity - the exact figures aren't known because many victims are too embarrassed to report the crime.

Firetrust had to adapt - and that's where MWP2010 came onto the scene.

Like the early version, you do need to invest some time to train the program so that it gets better at spam detection faster. It's something I needed to remind myself about when I too moved onto the new version.

Firetrust coders (programmers) are working really hard to improve speed / performance / accuracy. Their task is made more difficult because no two machines are exactly the same in terms of hardware or software - most system environments are unique - different operating system updates, drivers and so on.

I can only speak about my experience - but please understand I am not dismissing any adverse comments from other users. Our systems and environments are unique.

Here is an image showing CPU utilisation on my system - and there are a lot of things running in the background, including MWP: the process list is much longer than is shown in the images. Firefox came out as by far the biggest resource hog - but then I have lots of addons and open tabs. NIS (norton internet security - also based on .Net code) barely rates as does MWP2010. I noticed a minor spike in resource use for MWP2010 during prolonged checking - something I would expect, in the same way that I see a big performance hit when I run a full system check with NIS.

And active MWP2010 results:

Low MWP2010 activity
Clip12.png (53.48 KiB) Viewed 12443 times
All this demonstrates is that on my system, MWP2010 uses modest resources and subjectively appears to run at an acceptable speed. I have performed the test using a 'catcher' account containing > 1,000 spams and the performance was ok but not as fast as I would like to see. But then, I haven't fully trained my copy of the program at all ... once I do, I expect to see much better results in speed and accuracy.

Beta testers do things to deliberately 'break' a program to see if by doing so, we can reveal bugs or other issues (like speed and accuracy). We pass on our findings to the programmers and they work on things in order of priority.

Remember, you can always return to your previous working version of MWP and return as often as you like to see if an issue has been resolved: new releases come out fairly frequently - for the moment at least. The latest version of MWP2010 is 1.0.16. In case you might not already know, the first "1" refers to the major version and the "0.16" are revisions or build (minor changes / bug fixes / speed enhancements) and so on.

We know that this is a lot to take in and it must be very frustrating. Please be patient - work with us and continue to send in your concerns / suggestions, so that the new version continues to improve. This really is a collaborative effort between users and programmers.

If a sticky doesn't already exist, I might collaborate with others to write one that hopefully provides practical suggestions about how to improve performance - aimed at the non-tech user.

Once again, thanks heaps for the valued feedback!

(PS - for those who are interested, the images were obtained using a product called ENT [Essential Net Tools] from Tamosoft. It's one of a number of tools I need (given my dark hobby) and it's very handy at showing processes that don't always show up in the task manager - like malware.)

Hi, I complained to you about the 35-40 second start up shortly after the new MW came out and you said you would address starting time soon. what exactly is soon? I have reverted to V6.5 until start up is fixed.
For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.

We've already made some obvious improvements that we noticed, the startup will most likely get a much closer look at next week.

I can not seem to find the file autosupport.eml anywhere on my computer. I did a search and it came up with nothing.

Took a while, our mail server temporarily rejects most incoming mail and waits for the SMTP server to resend it and accepts it the second time.....useful as most spam sending machines don't bother to resend email, not useful as some mail servers take a while before they do resend the email....

There's nothing obvious in the logs, but then it's the start of the day so MailWasher has only just got started....

First thing...the account 'Dad .....' looks to have a bad password ? I can see it rejecting a couple of times, but the settings also tells me the account did work previously...not really an issue just noteworthy.

Try this version and let me know if it's any better http://mailwasherbeta.s3.amazonaws.com/ ... 082010.exe
This version does have an issue if you try to minimise using X, but you don't have that set, so should be fine.

If you still get the slowness on this version, just send me the logs again after it's happened so it has fresh info.

I can't see either why the logs didn't send the first time, I assume all the SMTP servers are correct and none require SMTP Authorisation etc...
