Automatic Checking in an IMAP Account

Fri Jun 13, 2025 2:38 am

Hi there, I've just installed version 7.15.33 of MW and I'm learning how to use it. In settings, I've set up my web mail account for MW to work from. One of the key advantages of using MW is given as weeding out unwanted email before it gets to your computer.

Recommended is to turn off the automatic checking by my email client. I have Outlook 2010 version 14.07.07268.5000. I have configured the IMAP protocol from my ISP.

I have tried disabling automatic checking through options>advanced>send & receive by un-checking the automatic checking option. However, I'm still getting email arriving in my Outlook inbox.

Can I turn it off some other way or is this just a characteristic of an IMAP protocol?

My OS is Windows 10 Home, 64 bit.

Any ideas, experience or suggestions would be great.

Hi Filtrit and welcome.

I have Outlook 2016 so not sure the settings are exactly the same. I also use POP3 so not sure if that matters. I don't think it should.

Anyway, when in Outlook and I go to Options > Advanced > Send and receive, I then have to click the Send/Receive button to get to those options. From there, with All Accounts highlighted, this is what my settings look like.

Those settings work for me. That is, if I have Outlook open - even if all day, Outlook will never download (receive) any emails. Only if and until I click the Send/Receive All Folders button from Outlook's Home tab, will it then download emails.

In MWP, under General > Washing Mail, I also have Launch after Wash Mail unchecked - but don't believe that really is an issue here.

I am not certain, but you may have to restart Outlook after making those changes for them to actually take effect.

Now one problem you cannot get away from as it is a timing issue. It is possible, and occasionally it happens that you wash your mail in MW and get rid of all the stuff you don't want to keep, leaving only the "keepers" in the MWP inbox. Then in the few seconds it takes for you start Outlook (if not already open) then to download those keepers into Outlook, some new spam may hit your email accounts and you end up downloading those too. :frown Not good but there's is no way for MWP to foresee those are coming. So after you wash your mail you have to be quick to click on Receive in Outlook.

If still having problems, then it may be an IMAP issue and I am not up on them.

Yea, it's an Outlook issue, we are working on ways around this with the upcoming MWPro 8, so hopefully we can find a way to prevent the auto download of mail when using IMAP...

The only program that I know of which does allow you to set IMAP accounts to NOT auto download is Thunderbird.....

Currently the only option for Outlook is to set it to work offline, or keep it closed when not in use.

Thanks for the replies. I guessed that there might be an issue with IMAP accounts but hoped that there wasn't! Unfortunately, the options available for IMAP Outlook aren't really workable on a day to day basis. Hopefully MWPro 8 isn't too far off. In the meantime I have started classifying incoming email to my web mail through MW so I will monitor how things go and see how effective it is in tackling my principal problem which is to limit spam.

Or, apparently, use POP3 as that works for me.

The IMAP protocol keeps an archive on your ISP's server as well doesn't it?

Nope, we don't have servers for email at all, MW's connection goes directly from MW to your email providers mail server and that's it.

Hi gingbat and thanks for your reply. Sorry, I should have worded my question more carefully. What I should have said was "The IMAP protocol keeps an archive on my ISP's server doesn't it? But I think you have answered my question.

That's not a problem, and yes, via IMAP all mail is retained on your providers mail server ...

Cheers!
