I want to MW virtually in a container (formerly Docker) so it runs on my network attached storage or maybe better inside a virtual machine. Is anyone running mW either way

I don't think that'll work sorry as MW needs access to the windows registry, we don't have a non-installable version as such.... sorry about that!
