New version questions/problems?

Mon Oct 18, 2010 5:12 am

Trialing MWP 2010 v~.35 on two machines. Came up with a few questions/problems. Since I'm not sure if some of these are bugs or config mistakes on my part, I'm putting them all into this one message so I won't "flood" the forum :) (If this is a forum faux pas, apologies in advance) I did poke around the forum, but didn't see anything likely for answers.

In no particular order:

1. While setting up my VERY numerous accounts, sometimes it would do a test server connection when I entered/changed a password, but not all the time. This is a GOOD thing :) but I dunno how to make it do that every time I add/change one, other than upon a general/specific account incoming check. Doing it in the config is much more elegant :)

2. Is there any way to filter the error log? While I know it is helpful for trouble shooting, 99.99999% of the time, all I'm interested in is if the credentials failed. Failing that, especially once the accounts are all working, can logging be turned off?

3. As mentioned above, I have a LOT of accounts, and in my old MWP I had them prefixed to help keep them in a moderately organized list. I know I can drag them up and down, but only one at a time. The window where they are listed is VERY small, and can't be sized. Is there any other way to order them more easily other than to simply edit accounts.xml? Which I did, btw. Be nice if the accounts could let me grab/select several at a time, the way windows does it.

4. The display options button is helpful, but the Zoom and Layout icons are not necessarily intuitive, especially the Layout ones. The others have an "intellisense" functionality where you can at least hover and see what they are, but not those two. Since hitting reset changes it immediately, I don't necessarily want to do that, since I might not be able to get it back to where it was.

5. A minor thing, but in the filters, I had converted mine by using the utility mentioned in the forums, which worked quite nicely. However, an oddity is that at least two of them came in colored a true red. The others, the goods, were green, and the rest blue. I tried to change the blues (all bads) to red, but it's not even in the dropdown. I even tried adding the applicable code for the color that is in filters.xml to the blues, duping those two reds, but that didn't work either. I'd like to know where that red even came from :) Plus I'd like to color my other bads red, too, instead of magenta. Doable?

FWIW, MWP 2010 has been acceptably fast for me, and so far, so good, other than the items mentioned above.

The filter color selection only affects the background of the filter name that appears in the Status column. Without seeing what your seeing I'll take a guess that the Red, Green and Blue you are referring to are the background colors of the messages shown in the Grid. Those are determined by the final sum of all of the values assigned to each evaluation tool. To see the effects right click on a message and select show evaluation details. Green indicates Good, Red Bad and Blue is Undetermined.

I'm referring to the filter config, Sidewinder. The status displays mirror what they are configured to show, bg wise, presumably. There's a drop box to color the bg of a given filter any of 18 colors, and none of them are Red. The nearest is a very definite magenta. Two of mine, however, got converted with all the rest of them, and DO show up as red, with a red hex value in the xml file. I can post an image if you like.

That would likely be the result of the conversion program.

EDIT: Since you have been in the Filter file have you attempted an edit. It's probably a Windows color palette call.

Yeah, I wondered that too, but... The colors came in with 8 characters, oddly, like this: #FFFF0000, which is strange enough, and even when I edited them back to the more correct #FF0000 values, the two red ones still stayed red and the others, even with the same values, stayed blue. The ones I made magenta in the config also stayed magenta, so now I'm wondering if that's being tracked somewhere else? Odd.

The conversion prog had been recommended here in the forum, btw, since filters are not part of the upgrade process as the accounts are.

[Later] I saw something in a locked topic, with a snippit of an apparently converted filter code that did show an 8 char color. How does THAT work?

Use the value that you posted from the file. Close MWP. Do the edit with Notepad. Save and Restart. I can change mine at will.

The first 2 characters are transparency and then next 6 are Red, Green & Blue but I know the order of the colours changed from v6 to v2010.

You cannot set the transparency in 2010 through the application as there is nowhere to change this value but if you edit the filters.xml you will be able to take advantage.

For an example create two filters one with #FFFF0000 and one with #88FF0000 and you'll see the difference :)

Aha! As a web programmer, this really threw me :) Are FF and 88 the only options or do other hex chars work too? Just wondering.

And yes, Sidewinder, I'm aware they can be changed at will, and that MWP needs to be closed first. I'll go back and play with them again, since mostly when I did try that, I was using the FIRST 6 chars (and only those, duh!) as the color.

Thanks!

For non-geeks, the drop box they are talking about only offers a limited set of colors:

New version seemed good for a start, but...

Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:14 am

It worked fine on my fastest computers. On my netbook it's a dog and I intend to go back to the old version. My main use for Mailwasher is filtering incoming email and cutting it off at the server if it's unwanted. Frankly the new version doesn't do this any better - it just looks prettier. I don't need most of the spam screening capabilities Mailwasher offers - these days ISPs do a pretty good job of that and I don't have much spam coming through. What there is, I can easily deal with manually with Mailwasher.

And I'm getting heartily sick of all the updates I'm being asked to install. I didn't buy this product to be a beta tester. I find that even on my fast computers it can be unstable. It was released far too soon.

Ah! Makes sense. This is the equivalent of the slidebar for brightness. <lightbulb flashes ON> :) Thanks, Anniebrion!

Does anyone have any thoughts on my other questions, by chance? We can remove number 5 now :)

If I understand your 1 - 4 it appears that they are actually suggestions rather than bugs. There is a FT suggestion forum to submit your recommendations.

Yes and no, Sidewinder. I did say that these were "issues" for me that could have been due to overlooked/bad configuration on my part (like #5). If any of these ARE such, would love to know how to fix/change them. If any of the 4 remaining ones are indeed simply suggestions, ie, features not in the current version, I'd be glad to move them to the suggestion forum. I simply don't know :(

You might try the suggestion site too, things don't tend to get as buried as the forum so it is handy if you don't want to do a bit of discussion about your idea.
