Android Galaxy Nexus -

Navigation:
The back button goes back through every step. It makes navigating back to the mail list or to other locations a chore. What is needed is a menu hooked to the android menu button that allows one to go to email accounts, inbox, spam tools, logout, etc.

Note: If you press the logout button and then press the Android back button, you are returned to your active display state with access to spam tools, including the friends list and the blacklist. Email accounts disappear, but other menu choices still work completely or partially. Add email account gives an incomplete form. Other buttons show form components.

You need a "not logged in" status flag that disables all functions except log-in (and future off-line features, such as editing the black and white lists.)

The menu back button and the Android back button work at cross purposes. Get rid of a back button on the app itself, use the Android back button instead.
Also, rethink the use of a separate menu button for the app. Create menus that are accessed by the android menu button. Eventually make them context sensitive.

Back button issues is a conflict between the design of the android operating system and the design of the a web application. You have to start thinking how to use the android paradigm. The only buttons you want on the android display are the functions that would normally be done. A button on each message that brings up the options for that message (friend, block, etc) and a delete check box. Put the rest on the Android menu button - including log-out.

Don't go back to the log-in screen after log-out. Terminate the app. If the user wants to log-in again, he can press the app icon. This should eliminate the problem of the system back button partially reversing the log-out.

We want to very quickly institute the check-mail option with user settable frequency (including manual only sync), because ISP's don't like to have their mail servers checked that often. Some accounts are blocked if they are checked too frequently.

Some thoughts.

1. Lost - I'm pretty sure you could only view each individual account in the previous version. We didn't have a view all feature.
2. Bug - Yes, I see this thanks.
3. Nice to have - yes we'll have this all in a setup wizard still to come.
4. We were talking about this today and found the hardware back button on the Android phone a nuisance :) Do you mean a back button with a popup selector? Good to know about the logout problem - we'll get that fixed.
5. At the moment it's a pretty generic app, so we'll customize parts for each platform as we go.
6. Don't go back to the login screen after logout - I think we need to fix the problem of being able to log back in. I'd say most systems which logout take you back to the login screen as it's not a termination process.
7. User settable frequency - we need to work on this because we do know some ISP's are not very friendly to frequent checking, but I'm not sure leaving it up to the customer is the best idea either.

@ Jahnr - You need to create an account. There should be a 'create account' link in the syncing login. It's not your email accounts, instead it's a Mailwasher account used for you to login to Mailwasher and view/sync all your email accounts from Mailwasher Pro 2012.

Hi,

having the latest app-version (05) installed, creating an new account and pushing the SAVE button
a message "Alert error" is created, no add-account possible.

@nick -

have created an account, using an existing EMail account, before you have answered.
After stopping and starting PRO2012 again, I wasn't asked for user/pw.

Q: Can I change this account, if YES- -> HOW?

Ok, that's odd. Can you make sure it's only a basic POP3 account, no SSL/TLS yet.

Also, if possible can you try syncing your accounts from Mailwasher Pro 2012 from the download in the email we sent today and see if that works.

@nick -

- pushed the "sync to mobile" botton, something happend, process ended w/o message

- created on mobile a new account with POP3 Server -> Alert device not known - message appears after SAVE - port 110 was the default

@jahnr - you can't change the sync account details (yet), just the email accounts synced within it via Mailwasher Pro 2012

I was doing it regularly as soon as I added two accounts. They were both on the screen at the same time. I remember a "show all accounts" row that showed up as soon as I put two accounts in. Of course, that version did not last long...

I'm assuming that the android back button can be manipulated. It seems like the html browser stack that you can go back and forward in. But there's no forward button on my android. If it can be manipulated by changing the pointer, like we can do in javascript - go back two or three pages, or to an absolute page, then you can use it to take the user to the main display - presumably the message list - from wherever they've gone.

But a pop-up selector, I would call a menu or sub-menu.

Roger that.

This a matter of operational ergonomic considerations. Just how often (outside of testing) do people exit an app and then immediately log back in? If we're efficient, we open an app, do our business, and then exit, more often that not, ignoring the log-out button - just closing it. Besides, exiting to a log-on screen, and then having to make another click to exit the app is an annoying extra step.

In my android, pressing the home key puts the app in the background where the widgets button will show the "backgrounded applications running". We have to swipe it out of there to terminate it?. My wife simply pushes the home screen button, and has little or know awareness of the multi-tasking and background apps. It stays in the background until she presses the icon again.
I hit the home button, then I used the widgets list and swiped mailwasher out. Then I hit the home button again to get the clean screen. But, when I hit the mailwasher icon to re-log-in, the app came up to the message list in the last account I looked at. Although it was supposedly shut down, it found itself alive and went right to the display screen. Could be a security issue if somebody picked up your phone turned on the home screen and pressed your mailwasher button. On the other hand, this behavior would save the need to have a "keep me logged in" option.
Based on the ergonomics of use, save yourself the time and effort of going back to the app on log-out. Only a fractional percentage of the time will somebody want to log back in.

We've had the user check frequency in the past versions. I typically set mine to over 10 minutes. In some cases I set it to manual only.
In this test situation all those checks are going through your server, because you're back-end is doing the actual query of my mail server - that is, if I understand correctly how the web application is working.

Thanks for all you do.

How to manage User/PW for synching on both sides: Mailwasher Pro 2012 / Android v 0.5
I forgot user/pw and hang totally in the air. :gag

Are there suggestions to use the same user/PW as with Google ?

hi there, just send me your email address and I'll get it removed from the database so you can start again. Send to nick.bolton@firetrust.com
You can use whichever password is easy for you to remember. It's just used to sync your settings.

My apologies. It appears that I was confusing Mailwasher with my email program - My how our memories change as time goes on.

Update: I'm successfully running 8 email accounts. I have noticed that the syncronization appears to be slow - much longer than 3 minutes. Have you changed the mail-check/syncronization interval to something longer than 3 minutes now?

Shortly after I used my regular Mailwasher (6.5.4 Pro) to clear the spam, I noticed a small red box with the word "error" in a pop-up that disappeared shortly. Is there a log-file anywhere that would record such an event? Is this what to expect if there is a log-in failure?

Moving forward.... A few ergonomic considerations
Right now, it take two finger taps (clicks) to mark an email as spam. In a great many cases, the information being displayed in the compact view is enough to make the determination. I'd like to see a toggle right on the compact listing that works like the 6.5.4 message list (red, green, white). Since spam is more common, and friends will mostly be already marked, a simple button, one click goes from white to red, another click from red to green, and the next from green to white, would do the trick. Perhaps the button could simply cycle the existing listing background color changes through pink, lime, and white, thus using code that's already present. Let clicking on the default (compact) listing text area go directly to view, saving another step.

It would also be simpler to allow a "click" on the message-view screen to return the display to the default listing, thus working like many other places where one click is open and a second click is close. (Toggle between compact list and view.) The user would not need to navigate to the "back" button in order to go back. I think users of Android are experienced enough that the difference between a tap, a push, and a brush would not be a problem in open/close message body.

Also, users have to use the back button in order to get to where they can mark the message as friend or block. That menu function should remain visible and available in the message view screen. (It should not scroll off the screen when the message is scrolled - nor should the trash check-box.)

The positioning of the pop-up screens for text entry is still a problem. The pop-up is not being dismissed after the entry is accepted and you try to edit it. The pop-up keeps coming back obscuring about two-thirds of the text line, and it completely covers up the marker used to move the cursor. It's a real pain to edit something. Try this example. Enter a second email address with everything the same except for the first couple of letters in the name. Example: subscribe@ballroomdances.org and unsubscribe@ballroomdances.org. I entered subscribe by typing everything. Then I figured I'd use the recall and I began with the email address subscribe. After one or two letters, the whole thing popped up, so I accepted it, but the pop-up screen came back when I clicked on the text to try to insert the "un" at the beginning, and the pop-up stayed there while trying to get to edit the text. I finally accepted close and erased two letters, and then put the "un" in and the two letters ("su") back in.
Since I have five different email addresses on this domain alone, and four other domains, retyping everything from scratch is not fun. Since there are no left and right cursor movement keys, we depend on touches for our HID - (touchpad mouse work). But the pop-up screens are conflicting with the editing function by blocking access to the cursor movement function.
I've sent a screen shot by direct email.

That's ok, we did have a very early version which displayed everything in all accounts, but we limited it to one account to begin with.

The sync in the background actually does it every 15 minutes if you're not using it, but when you use it/login then it goes to every 3 minutes. We'll refine these as we see how the load is.

We don't have a log file on the phone at the moment, but the error might have related to a lost connection.

We're currently looking at the the user interaction side of things with the grid as we've had a bit of feedback on this, so I definitely think there's some efficiencies to be had so I'll pass this on to the designer.

We've removed that text overlap in the text area for the next version.
