Any plans for iOS VPN support?

Well, iOS and Mac support for HideAway. That's what I use a VPN for -- when out in public using free wifi. So ... do you plan on adding that, if so, when? I'm in the market right now for a new VPN provider that offers good speed, plus support for multiple platforms. Thank you.

Hi there

No plans at this stage I'm afraid. As we're filtering at a fairly low level to redirect specific traffic rather than all, it means the work we've done on that is very Windows specific.

I'd be keen to hear back though on who you do end up using, as I expect we'll get asked this a few times and it'd be good to have a recommendation.

Thanks

Darn it, I have great confidence in your company/software so this is disappointing, to say the least!

I've vacillated between TorGuard and PrivateInternetAccess. I've used Anonymizer and NeoTunnel in the past -- both were so slow, too many dropped TCP packets, or TCP out-of-state, that they were virtually useless except for my iOS devices for VPN. My own criteria are: support for multiple platforms, including iOS and Mac, good ratings (responses) on http://www.torrentfreak.com regarding taking privacy and no logging very seriously, the ability to choose for each session from a multiplicity of servers worldwide, which also implies speed or lack of based on your current location, the number of servers to choose from, stated bandwidth for their servers, and the ability to stealth deep packet inspection, which is useful when you're on a web site and they recognize your IP addy is "foreign," thus not acceptable nor useful on their site so you can't get a simple transaction done. I also like the answer from PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) about warrant canaries: We do not have a warrant canary in place at this time as the concept of a warrant canary is, in fact, flawed at this time, or in other words, is “security theater.” So true. Kabuki theater at best! I don't do P2P, and PIA separates P2P servers from other traffic, so you can choose those for that function if you're so inclined.

I've done speed tests on PIA, where you can choose the area of origin for your VPN server. I like their speeds that are fairly local to my state, so I think I'm going with PIA. They're about half the price of TorGuard too.

Yep, I've done my homework, which is why it was joy, joy to get your e-mail about your own VPN, yet sad, sad when you stated you're not supporting anything but Windows.

Sigh.
:cry

You most certainly have, appreciate the reply.

I couldn't rule out Mac/Linux at a later date, but that would require some significant success on the Windows part first :)
Gotta take these things at a pace we can manage.

Hm.. too bad it doesn't support Mac yet. I'm gonna buy a license for my Win pc, but I would like to have one for my macbook as well.

I think the statement on the product page that support for OSX and Linux is "coming soon" is kind of misleading. That's a completely different statement than "I couldn't rule out Mac/Linux at a later date"...

I don't write the cheques ;) Entirely reasonable money is thrown into Mac/Linux.

But where are you seeing that text on the HideAway product page ? I can't find it :scratch

Edit : Nope, found it, my bad. I'll seek clarification, my assumption was sticking to Windows, I could very well be wrong.

Just my opinion: I think it's entirely reasonable from a project management & resources point of view that you run down any and all problems with the Windoze version and the servers associated with the VPN, and take the learned experiences, port the VPN project to other platforms. Just saying as my former IT Director's 10K foot view.

The "disappearing" info on Mac/Linux? Maybe it was hiding in the same place as your spider ... :scratch

Heh, hope so as that info will get removed proper soon :)

FWIW, the UI is a cross platform GUI and we've got the tunneling library which should need tweaks but not a great deal, the real trick is then replacing the packet filter with the libnet library for Mac/Linux. So that puts us in a better place than I first thought, but still a great deal of work, and as you rightly say, something you don't explore until Windows is solid and proven.
