MW7 pro 7.12.38 is not checking Gmail account.
I have:
- toggled allow less secure apps
- deleted the Gmail account from MW and re-created it

I don't get any error or warning messages
It just doesn't download messages

Can you send me some logs.

To do that go Help >> Send Support Logs >> enter a brief note like 'as per forum - RGC' >> in the Ticket Number field enter chris >> Send Logs >> reply back once sent, so I can check they arrived all OK.

Cheers

OK thanks. Was this account working previously ? I do seem to have a couple of people that are having issues with the GMail access, though for them it's also effecting their email program, not just MailWasher. Webmail still works. But I'm wondering if perhaps there is an issue with GMail at present.

It is rejecting the logon, but this could mean many things and if you're sure your password entered is correct, then I would believe it.
The error MailWasher gets is
S: -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.

If you try setting to IMAP instead of POP, does that work ?
Also check here that POP and IMAP access are enabled https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/fwdandpop

I don't understand this. I still cannot fetch my gmail from MWP. I even totally deleted and re-created the account. I ensured 3rd party access, IMAP and POP were enabled. Yet I can access it via my browser telling me my password is correct. Very odd.

Outlook is bringing the emails in all OK on that account, or it was still also having issues ?
If I recall you couldn't send an email via the GMail account

Yeah, it is not just MWP. It definitely seems (to me anyway) to be on Google's side since MWP and Outlook are fetching my emails from Cox (my ISP) just fine. So that tells me my security is not blocking it either. I just verified again that "Less Secure Apps is set to ON". I just keep getting the error:

Description: Failed to login to server "pop.gmail.com" for your Gmail POP account.

Is 2 Step Authentication enabled ? If so, try creating a new app specific password to use in Outlook and MW.

I saw that but I don't use 2 Step there. And I just double checked and 2-step is not enabled.

If there are any other ideas, regardless how remote, I welcome them.

For now, I have told Gmail to automatically forward emails to my Cox account and MWP is fetching those just fine.

You could try looking at the Less Secure Apps option in another browser, I have heard from people noticing it wasn't correctly setting itself when using Chrome.

If you don't mind adding a cell # to your Google, then you could try enabling 2 factor and then create an app password.

If you have another machine to try, might be worth checking that it's not something machine specific. Email AntiVirus plugin maybe.

It seems like the issue is POP and IMAP access, though you mentioned SMTP failing also. A password change might give things a kick.

Yeah, I thought about putting MWP on another computer to see what happens. But I think I will change passwords first and see what happens. However, life seems to be getting in the way of me spending time on this right now - hopefully tomorrow will give me some free time.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks, Chris.

Well, changing the password didn't "kick" things back into place. So I installed MWP on a secondary computer, added my gmail account and same error. So at least I know now it is not my computers or my MWP (or Outlook 2016) - something changed on gmail's side so I will have to keep digging around there. I suspect I did something when I was messing around with my android phone - I am just not sure of my timing there, that is, if I was messing around with my phone the immediate night before I noticed the problem on my computer. They say something is the first to go when you get old, but I forget what that something is. :?

But I'm 99.999% sure it was not a badguy messing with my account. Even though I don't use 2SV, I use a very secure, 15+ character password generated by my password manager. But that's been changed now anyway.

At least for now, I am getting all my emails in MWP after telling gmail to forward to my Cox account - which MWP has no problem accessing.

Will keep you posted. Thanks again.

Just created another gmail account using the exact same settings and it works! I'm totally confused now.

Bill, I share your confusion. My ISP is migrating its email service to Google Mail (the GSuite offering, not Gmail). I have long used MWP to preview my messages from 2 accounts: my POP account on my ISP from which I download messages, and an IMAP Gmail account that I mostly ignore except to periodically delete the accumulated Facebook notifications and the garbage that Google itself blesses me with. Before this imposed migration I wanted to test whether the settings advice that my ISP has provided would work for downloading my existing Gmail into my email client (Eudora, for those old enough to remember and cherish it). No luck with the download. That forced me to consider moving to Thunderbird as a 3rd party client. In the course of learning about Tbird, I messed about with various settings in Gmail in the course of which I realized that my changes were affecting MWP's access to the Gmail account, and now, despite having returned the setting to "normal" I keep getting an error when MWP attempts to log in to Gmail.

The MWP error message is the same as Bill's: Failed to login to server "imap.gmail.com" for your GMail account

I don't quite understand Bill's solution. Is this about creating a new account for Gmail in MWP or a new Gmail account in Google (presumably having deleted the old one first)?

Re: Gmail

First my "solution" is not a solution at all. It was more or less a Mickey Mouse workaround.

My problem with my Gmail account remains. I cannot send or receive emails with that Gmail account using MWP or my client, Outlook, using either POP3 or IMAP. I can, however, log directly into that Gmail account with my browser and send and receive just fine. This tells me I do know my correct password and I have ensured I have configured MWP and Outlook with that correct password. I have also ensured that Gmail account is set to allow 3rd party ("Less Secure") application access and it is set to allow POP3. But I still get that error.

My "workaround" was to create a whole new Gmail account, set it up for 3rd party access and POP3. Then set up MWP and Outlook to use POP3 to fetch emails from there. And that works just fine! I then told my original Gmail account to forward all emails to the new Gmail account. So now, all emails sent to my original Gmail are automatically forwarded to the new Gmail account and now, when I tell MWP to fetch my emails, it does that with no problems.

So at least now, I am getting all my emails in MWP.

What I then did was open both Gmail accounts and put them side by side on my monitors (this is where having two monitors is really nice! :)). I went step-by-step, line-by-line through each configuration to see if I could find why my original Gmail account was blocking MWP's access. But both accounts are set up exactly the same! ??? I even installed MWP on a second computer, configured MWP to use that original Gmail account and it failed the same way. So it is not my computer. I can only conclude there is some corruption on Google's end with my original Gmail account. I just cannot figure out where, or how to correct it. I have tried all the solutions suggested at the Gmail forums with no luck.

Since my workaround is working, I've been ignoring this out of frustration. I will poke around again and will post any positive results - if any.
