"Store cached emails" setting not saved on W11.

Wed Nov 06, 2024 11:59 am

Version: 7.15.10

I recently installed MailWasherPro on a new W11 machine.
I exported and imported everything from my old W10 machine to the W11 machine.
When using MWP, I noticed that all mails were downloaded every time the application started.
As my mailboxes have about 13k mails in total, this takes a long while (I've got it set to download all read emails), and then they all get evaluated after that, taking even longer.
I noticed that the "Store cached emails" setting (which should prevent redownloading all messages?) was unchecked.
So I checked it, and restarted MWP. It downloaded all of the messages again, and when I checked the accounts, the "Store cached emails" setting was unchecked again.
I tried to get it to remain checked a couple of times, making sure the MWP process was gone before I started it again. But the checkbox keeps resetting to unchecked, and my emails keep getting downloaded each time.

I then uninstalled the application, cleaned out the ProgramData folders for MWP, and reinstalled it. I added one of my accounts again (so not importing them) as an IMAP account (which checks the cached checkbox automatically). But the checkbox refuses to stay checked, and MWP keeps downloading all of my mails each time.

This same problem did not occur on my W10 machine, so it might be related to Windows, or to the fact I've got a newer version of MWP on the new machine.

Yes, store cached emails will appear unchecked for IMAP accounts as this option is only available for POP accounts, we really should remove it for IMAP actually....

However, MW does cache the emails for IMAP by default.

And yes, it will seemingly download them all with every mail check, ( as it needs to run them through all your spam tools and filters ) however it should be much faster then the initial mail check ?

Note though that when you use IMAP, you can set it to only download unread emails (uncheck "Download read emails" under the Incoming tab >> Advanced for this account so it won't display them all with each mail check anyway?

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
I find it strange that IMAP doesn't work with storing cached emails as the help text states "It is recommended that when using MailWasher with an IMAP account this is enabled" ?

MWP first says it is downloading all mails, and then Evaluating them all after that (about 10 mails per second...). So it doesn't seem to be caching a lot? Perhaps it is slightly faster a second time, but it still takes quite a lot of time overall. So the caching does not seem to be happening it seems.
When I do another mail check, it will properly download only new messages, and be done very fast.
In any case, this behaviour was not present on the previous machine I used MWP on. And I've been using MWP for 15+ years, with the same mailboxes, on many machines. So there either is something strange with this MWP version, or it is due to W11

And true, I could set it to download only unread mails, but that's not how I've been using MWP. I basically use MWP as my mail client, cause it's always been very fast, lightweight and reliable. If I'm looking for an old mail, MWP is the fastest way for me to do it.

Yes, the Help file is due for a update sorry, that part is incorrect, previous versions used to have a cache option for both pop and IMAP....

Re the slowness, yes, the developer is working on speeding this up, he's found that users with many filters can see a slowdown for certain filter setups.

Also, it may be that the evaluation is taking a long time, as MW does this with every mail download whether the emails are cached or not.... personally I find the origin of spam tools and Firstalert (Both under Settings>>Spam Tools) can be pretty slow to evaluate so I have these disabled, possibly that'll help?

I don't have any filters, and FirstAlert and Origin of spam are both already disabled.
I do have a whitelist of about 100 addresses. Which is strange because I did a complete reinstall and cleared out my %appdata% folder for Firetrust.
Is there something else that I should be cleaning up to make sure the entire program is reset?

The problem really is the fact that it seems there is no caching going on at all. On my previous machine, I did not see MWP downloading all mails each time I started it.
The validation might have happened each time and might be a bit slower, but that wasn't really noticeable.

OK sure thing, re your friendslist, all these files are stored in the programs user folder which you can access via Help>>User Files, and are only removed if you click NO when asked if you want to keep your user data during the uninstallation process.

When you reinstall also, if you run the setup wizard, it'll import friends email addresses from any address books it can find.

Re the caching issue, yes with 13k emails being displayed every time MW restarts would be slow even with caching...., I just cannot see how it was fast on the other PC to be honest....?

If anyone else has these sorts of quantities of emails could report in to see what their speeds are like possibly....?
