MWP and Windows 7

Fri May 04, 2012 1:01 pm

I just did an upgrade of components and from XP to 7. I'm not impressed with 7 and I am having trouble with the system tray icons. MWP doesn't show up there although I have gone into notifications frequently to set it. And I have had a freeze from MWP. Has anyone else had these problems?

No problems running W7 with MWP 2012. What version of MWP are you running. I assume you know about the auto hiding of the icons under the small arrow.

You should also make sure that MWP is "Trusted" by you security software.

I downloaded the latest version. The way I had it on XP (loved XP!) was that the MWP icon would pop up on the system tray blinking when there was mail. Now it keeps going into the "hide and don't show notification" status. I am sure this is 7's problem, not MWP's, but wondered if others had this happen.

All you need to do is click on the Customize line after clicking on the arrow, go the MailWasher Pro and select Show Icons and Notifications.

BTW, in my MWP, there's a (reported) bug which makes the MWP icon appear at the SysTray irrespective of the settings illustrated above - I'm auctioning my copy, anybody like to bid. :devil

That's not a Windows 7 problem (have never come across this in the last 4 years) - check the following figure.

Your icon cache in the SysTray Notification area seems to be corrupted. You may need to purge the same by using a .bat file - it's quite easy to create your own. The commands for the file are as follows:-

Code: Select all

:: Created by: TrustFire
:: http://forum.firetrust.com/
:: How to purge the icons in the System Tray Notification Area (reboot required / explorer needs to be restarted)

@echo off
cls
set regPath=HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
set regKey1=IconStreams
set regKey2=PastIconsStream

echo The Explorer process must be killed to reset the Notification Area Icons Cache.
echo.
echo Please SAVE ALL OPEN WORK before continuing
echo.
pause

echo.
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
echo.
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%a in ('Reg Query "%regpath%" /v %regkey1% ^| find /i "%regkey1%"') do goto iconstreams
echo Registry key "IconStreams" already deleted.
echo.

:verify-PastIconsStream
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%a in ('Reg Query "%regpath%" /v %regkey2% ^| find /i "%regkey2%"') do goto PastIconsStream
echo Registry key "PastIconsStream" already deleted.
echo.
goto confirm-restart

:iconstreams
reg delete "%regpath%" /f /v "%regkey1%"
goto verify-PastIconsStream

:PastIconsStream
reg delete "%regpath%" /f /v "%regkey2%"

:confirm-restart
echo.
echo.
echo Windows must be restarted to finish resetting the Notification Area Icons.
echo.

:wrong
set /p choice=Restart now? (Y/N) and press Enter:
If %choice% == y goto Yes
If %choice% == Y goto Yes
If %choice% == n goto No
If %choice% == N goto No
goto wrong

:Yes
shutdown /R /f /t 00
exit

:No
echo.
echo Restart aborted. Please remember to restart the computer later.
echo.
echo You can now close this command prompt window.
explorer.exe
A ready made .bat file with the above commands can be used instead, from the following attachment:-
Attachments
Purge_SysTray_Notification_Area_Icons_Cache.zip
Before running the attached .bat file, please ensure you save and close all documents & programs and also reboot the system after running it.

I'm very grateful for your reply but I'm afraid I don't know what to do with a batch file. I don't want to mess things up more!

You just got to run it (by double clicking it) - I use this one on a weekly basis. :thumbsup

If you feel scared, you can do it the CCleaner way, too. ;)

Hi, christinab:

It looks as if Sidewinder and Trustfire have things "under control", and I don't mean to butt in (I am just a MWP home user, not an expert).

So, just to add a bit to their suggestions: :)
There is a tutorial for rebuilding the Win7 iconcache at the sevenforums: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49 ... build.html
It includes 2 different methods -- a "batch" file akin to what Trustfire suggests, and a "manual" method.
I've used them both once or twice a long while back with no problems for an issue similar to what you are experiencing.

Feel free to "take it or leave it" and HTH,

We're more than glad to see folks participating and throwing in their 2 cents - personally, I learn a lot (thanks for the link.) :mrgreen:
