opensource spam gateway - SpamAssassin or MailCleaner?

Tue Apr 22, 2025 4:27 pm

We have an on-prem Exchange 2016 server hosting about 25 mailboxes. We currently have a subscription on our Untangle firewall which includes spam and virus filtering. The subscription is coming due soon and to be honest I'm not happy with the protection it provides. Seems to be our ESET endpoint at the workstations is catching more of the viruses and spam than the Untangle box is, so I'm planning to not renew the subscription and go with something standalone - and free/opensource would be a great benefit as well.
I've been looking to setup a mail filtering gateway like SpamAssassin, but I've also seen a few articles on MailCleaner that make it look like a better all-in-one alternative. Any suggestions?
FWIW - my linux-foo is pretty good, and I understand that any opensource/free alternatives will require hands on maintenance and updates. I'm fully prepared for this
