Change default settings loacation

Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:31 pm

In the previous version a method was supplied to change the default settings file location, in this version it defaults into the users roaming area, I would like to be able to select a different location. Grateful for advice.

Regards

I have my folders in E:\Email\Firetrust.

I do this but using an application that move the source folder to a target destination and creates a Windows Junction that points the the new location. Windows sees the files as it the original location but the are actually stored in my specified folder.

Download JunctionPointer here: http://dirlinker.codeplex.com/Release/P ... dId=101722

This technique can be used for the relocation of any folder. I move my games from Valves Steam Application to my HDD as this is 2TB and mt SSD is only 256GB :) Also my Thunderbird email/news folders are relocates as it the Firefox Cache :)

I would also like a built-in solution, preferably without registry editing or using third party software.

Why? Because I like to run a back-up regime that does not entail picking all over the user roaming area to find what is and isn't essential.

By the way, anyone using the old shortcut trick will find that MW2010 does not find their Friends and Blacklist files when they want to import from them.

FYI, MWP2010 does not use the registry.

Thanks for that suggestion: I tried it and it wouldn't copy and replace the folder, while I'm sure I could get this to work in the end, it would be great if I could just select a location, as it *uggers up my backup regime that I seperately have to quickly make backups of this folder b4 restoring. Not what I want.

Thanks and regards

Have you tried running JunctionPointer as administrator? I got it to move my folders with no problem :scratch

You can do the folder move manually and get it to just create the junction (Shortcut) in the old location.

Thanks, the run as admin worked but ---being really thick here...what way round do I link..i.e. is "linklocation" the place I'm moving from or to??

Looked for some help files but couldn't find any...it probably doesn't matter, but would be grateful (again) for your advice.

Link Location = The folder you want to move, this becomes the junction (shortcut). ie. C:\Users\Annie\AppData\Roaming\Firetrust

Link To = The target location for the folder. ie. D:\Email\Firetrust
