Updating Video Drivers

Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:38 pm

Since launch we've come across a small number of folk who have display issues which seem to be from having old drivers. See image below for an example.

Is there a useful utility that isn't crapware, scamware that can accurately determine if the video drivers need updating ? I know sites like Nvidia have an online scanner, but I was hoping for something that would cover all make cards and not be brand specific.
Windows Update may also have some updates for Video Drivers in the Optional section, so maybe that's our best shot ?

The few utility programs I tried seemed to be junk

These are going to cover the vast majority of folks. Usually you don't need a "brand specific" driver for your card, just the proper one for the chip set.

http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx (right side pick boxes for desk, note and work)

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support?iid=hdr+support (US version) offers a detector and downloads.

The Windows Update option is iffy as it doesn't do a very good job and can load a bad driver.

I've just updated everything and yet MW2010 still seems to be refusing the clear-type Windows 7 monitor settings - the interface because of this is terrible to read :(
