mwp-19 deletes mail I don't want to delete - why?

Sat Sep 04, 2010 2:10 pm

I have two filters, two mail accounts. Each filter marks as "good" the mail which comes with a specific leading word in each email "subject" column. One of the two accounts deletes the mail within 1 to 2 hours after receiving the mail. The other account saves the mail, marks it as required, and is no problem. Both accounts are set up identical in the mail program. How can I stop this deletion of wanted emails???

That sounds like you have an e-mail program running somewhere that is accessing the account and removing the messages, you could check the MW recycle bin to be sure but I don't think you will find them there.

I have windows mail on one desktop, and thunderbird on one desktop. These are the only PC'x I run MWP on. I also have a laptop that runs Outlook Express. All mail programs are set to not delete, and are set to not automatically check mail. These are the recommended settings to let MWP determine status of mail, and let me delete unwanted mail prior to downloading to my pc's or laptop.

Were the missing messages in your MW recycle bin then?

I can think of two possibilities.

First, some one else has your email id/password and is downloading your mail. Change the Password on your Account(s).

Second, there is another email program on one of your systems the may be loading at system start and is set to download when started. Use MSCONFIG and Task Manager to do some detective work.

Error on my last post - I rechecked the recycle bin in MWP, and found about 25 or so emails that had been deleted from MWP for some unknown reason. I restored them all, and this a.m. came back to my email and found that they had been restored with yesterday's date, and then MWP deleted them again and they were back in the recycle along with some new ones. I am thinking there is a setting in MWP that I have messed up somewhere somehow. Changed my email passwords (both of them) and will see if that is the problem. No other email programs running as near as I can tell, cause I don't have any more email programs on my computers. I will go through the checks to make sure though. Thanks all

Go through each MW filter and verify auto-delete is off, check the auto delete on the spam-tools, spam-ratings screen to make sure it is off.

What is the status showing on the deleted messages?

Make sure that you are watching the Delete column. Llok for the tick mark on the Trash Can icon for the messages in question. Since you found the the messages in the Recycle Bin then it was MWP that did the deletions when you Wash.

I suggest that you open the Side Panel to observe the scoring from each of the tools to determine why the evaluation is declaring deletion.

If the messages disappear as soon as they come in then it's auto deletion.

stan_qaz - I went through all you suggested. All auto delete was off, moved the "good" rating to 200 on both filters in the "action" tab, and checked status in the recycle bin on the deleted emails. their status showed "Family Law" which is how I have them labeled after the filter does it's thing. The deleted mail in the recycle was only about 20 to 30 in number out of about 3000 or so I have received in the last 3 months. Only that many were present in the recycle tab. I will keep trying.

Sidewinder - Not all the emails were in the recycle tab. (see above) The emails never get beyond the initial download to MWP stage. They just don't appear there or anywhere when I hit the download button. If there was a check in the delete column, it would download them and then when I tried to wash they would disappear, at least that is what I believe would happen. I am working on as many of the things you guys have suggested, but I am still not very knowledgeable about the scoring and the numbers. Trying to learn.

Thanks

For the messages that you can see in the Recycle Bin enable the Side Panel there and then select one of the messges of interest and look at the scoring or each of the tools there. Write them down and do this for three or four and post the results back here.

The status is "Family Law Mail" - Learning is +149 - Blacklist is -155 - Custom Filters is +200 - Total MailWasher Rating is +199
These are the values stated on the side panel for all the "family law mail" emails that were somehow deleted.

The Total Rating value would not have marked the message for deletion. The First place I would look is at the Actions Tab on your custom filter and see where you have the Overrride Delete setting.

Second it's not clear why you have an email address that you want on the Blacklist.

First - The action tab "override Delete" setting on both my filters is set to "never mark for delete"
Second - Not only is it not clear why I have an email address that is marked for Blacklist, I don't have it marked for Blacklist. But the only emails I can find for that email address are marked just as I described them to you. I tried to unmark them for blacklist, but they just stay the same no matter what I do. I also can't find any of the addresses there in the Blacklist list under settings.

Check the Blacklist again for domian based entries or related wildcards e.g portion of address in front of @ set with an *
