Today has been good, around 20 aftershocks but none worth mentioning. There's been a couple of small quakes too further up the country, time for them to share in our joy of feeling nauseous

But as mentioned elsewhere, with the girlfriends father just dying this afternoon it's added that extra emotion and shifted focus of things.

My guess is that your dog has a much more sensitive set of sensors to predict the aftershocks before you feel them.

Well this is the odd thing, since about midnight?...he'd been acting very odd, but that's a good 7 hours ahead of time so will put that to coincidence for now....

If he starts repeating said oddness though, I'm going to start stretching my legs and make sure things needed are in the right places

Take your cues from him when he sleeps you might need to do the same.

BBC just had a report of a 5.1 aftershock a short time ago. Wonder if it knocked out your power.

It said the state of emergency was extended another week.

Yeah that was around 7:50am.....I was on the laptop at the time after being up night answering emails. Frayed the nerves as it was so close to the main city, it really felt like it was around a 6.0 when compared to all the others.

We've had aftershocks before that measured higher than the 5.1, but they were further away and deeper in the earth. Thankfully though power losses were very isolated, just some small pockets of the city. Oddly a lot of people commented they could smell Sulphur afterwards as well....not sure if they were just confusing burst sewerage....but Christchurch is nestled against two extinct volcanoes.


The State of Emergency makes sense to be extended, we've had more buildings damaged. The building we work in apparently has a crack in a supporting column now, and the large 8 story brick wall right beside our building has a few more cracks too, so that might come down. Many buildings will need to be inspected again, so the central city has to be controlled and locked down in areas, army and Police needed to keep out the looters


That main aftershock opened up some more gaps along some of the ceiling skirting at my place, but I have to say overall it's been solid. With everything I've seen so far, I'll well pleased with how it's holding up, and we must be built on a really good bit of dirt.

The TV gives a small creak everytime there's an aftershock, it's usually the best way to tell as I often hear that before noticing anything else. The dog is useless now, he's asleep on the bed and we just had a small aftershock as I was typing this....he didn't even lift his head....

I'm going to take that as an omen to get a quick nap in myself

If the dog is asleep all is safe. Animals will sense unusual events hours beforehand. Stay safe and get all the rest you can get. The same goes for the rest of the FT team. Stay out of lifts FGS. The poo smell would be sulphur or a mixture of same plus other gases.

So my nap turned out to be a 6-7 hour heavy sleep on the couch ....slept through 10 small aftershocks

Maybe I've lulled myself into a false sense of security but things seem to be returning to some normality now.


The building we work from has been opened up again, off limits to general public but staff OK. It's still a hazard area, as mentioned there is a large 8 story brick wall with some damage that's right beside ours. We're on the 3rd floor of our building so if next doors wall did come down we'd have some bricks coming through the windows etc..


Damage wise it's apparently not bad, I believe a couple of machines won't boot, but our internal servers and most other things seem OK. None of the servers we have in the office are related to production services though. All the websites, email and so on are in New Jersey.


Programmers haven't had too much down time, am sure apart from lost sleep and just general disturbance.


I'm not aware of any staff, friends, family having any injuries. There's been a bit of damage around the place and we know of at least the accountants house has become unliveable. Unfortunately too the rat living in my roof space survived, so it's off back to the poison shop soon to finish off what the earthquake couldn't.


Water is no longer on 'boil notice', there's been no contaminants found lately. Schools are reopened in outlying areas, most I think are reopening Monday. Universities might be slightly longer, not sure, but as it is a heap of students are now volunteering their time helping to clean up the mess, it got to the point where Civil Defence indicated they no longer needed volunteers.



Sadly in terms of aftershocks the data isn't good enough right now...some scientist dude writes...

"I know this is distressing a lot of you, but I am hopeful that these aftershocks might be the biggest we get. However, they may not be, and we could get a bigger one months from now."

This is also due to the aftershock that gave us a good rattle being in a different fault than the main quake....at least that's what they're thinking.
