From what I've just seen (short Roman holiday... wow, great city!) the Roman Catholics could help their Anglican brethern to the remaining 40 million w/o even the blink of an eye. Between the wealth we've seen displayed in all of those churches and chapels, who'd miss a golden candlestick or two, hmm?!
In shocking contrast to that: I don't think I have seen so many old folk begging (mostly on the tresholds of those churches, but also on almost every other streetcorner) in any other European city I've visited.....
